Campbell's Laws on Professional Ethics (REVISED)

Excerpts from one of the rare occasions when Dr. David Campbell gave a lecture in one of his graduate classes...

  1. To have integrity means to do the what's right because it's the right thing to do, not because of any reward or punishment.

  2. A decrease in budget does not mean a decrease in quality of service.

  3. Too much productivity is wasted worrying what others think, or do.

  4. If you can't say it to their face, shut up.

  5. Always strive to improve yourself.

  6. Unlike when you're in school, there are no 90% days.

  7. When things go wrong, take charge! Take responsibility! Make the tough descisions!

  8. If you don't think you're good enough, you're not.

  9. The job comes first, make friends on your own time.

  10. The most important person you have to answer to is yourself.

  11. There are no half-measures or shortcuts to a job well done.

  12. Always admit when you're wrong. Then make it right.

  13. Being irresponsible is defined as an irrational need to make excuses and blame others.

  14. Learn to pick your battles wisely.

  15. Any organization that does not communicate effectively is not working at its full potential and is probably wasting valuable resources.

  16. A job is more than a paycheck and benefits. If you don't also love what you do, then you are settling for less than your best and forcing others to put up with your mediocrity.

  17. If your profits come from providing a service to others, take a moment to remember what the word service means and act accordingly.

  18. Solve the problem.

  19. Solve the problem NOW.

  20. Dressing the part really does increase your confidence, (not to mention your professionalism).

  21. Your attitude speaks volumes about you.

  22. Remove the word Try from your vocabulary.

  23. Add the word Persist to your vocabulary.

  24. Do not lower your expectations of others simply because they do. Expect and demand that others rise above their expectations.

  25. You are not expected to be perfect, but you are expected to produce to the best of your ability every day. Or make room for someone who can.
