COLEFORD, DEVON, ENGLAND

COLEFORD (named after the brook)

A peaceful hamlet with a charming 13th century thatched inn by the side of a brook. Tales are told the inn being a monk's retreat and a story of Charles I reviewing his troops from Spencer cottage. From the late 1700's this was a coach stop, on a route from Taunton-Oakhampton and from London-Stratton, Cornwall. To have travelled from London (184 miles) by coach with the minimum post chaise and pair would have cost each traveler 9 pounds 5 shillings.
