November 11, 1998: (as reported in the Milan News-Leader)
The Milan High School Quiz Bowl Travel Team used depth and balance to defeat Lansing Waverly High School 270-260 in its second round QuizBusters Tournament match.
However, the final outcome was in doubt until Milan senior Chuck Borner sealed the victory with a ten point answer in sudden death overtime.
"He's just a fearless competitor", said Milan coach Tom Smith. "He's been amazing under pressure since his freshman year. I know he prides himself on rising to the occasion in clutch situations."
Milan had a daunting task in trying to overcome Waverly High's Josh LaVigne, whose 130 points were a game high. The Big Reds countered with a full team effort including 60 points from Christine Murray, 50 points apiece from Borner and Sarah Smallwood, and 30 points by James Caldwell.
The Big Reds also held a near 2 to 1 advantage in Bonus points scored, which included a key 40 point bonus conversion to springboard Milan back into contention and set the stage for Borner's heroics.
"In past seasons, we may not have beaten a team like this," said Smith. "Right now we're composed, playing together, and playing with confidence. Our regular season is right around the corner and this experience has us looking forward to it with some high hopes."
Milan will not play its next QuizBusters match until January, but will begin league play with a home match against Manchester on Wednesday, December 2. The Varsity will start their match at 3:30 in the MHS Librarium with the JV contest to follow. All are encouraged to attend.

Milan High School Quiz Bowl made history on Monday by winning the Washtenaw Area Quiz Bowl League Tournament. The Big Reds shocked the field in winning their first ever League Tournament Championship.
The key to Milan's success may have been their ability to control the first half of each match. In defeating teams from Pinckney, Tecumseh, Whitmore Lake, and arch-rival Saline, the Big Reds never trailed at halftime.
The tournament team for Milan consisted of Chuck Borener, James Caldwell, Jalynn Grieshaber, Jammey Lewis, Jennifer Millspaugh, Christine Murray, and Sarah Smallwood.
Jammey Lewis was voted to the All-League First Team, but every Big Red player made key contributions along Milan's championship run.
By winning the tournament, Milan has earned an invitation to the State Tournament to be held in Port Huron on April 24, 25, and 26.
Congratulations to Milan High School Quiz Bowl!
