Hierakonpolis

Known to the Egyptians as Nekhen, Hierakonpolis was the ancient residence of the earliest kings. The vulture-goddess Nekhbet, symbol of Upper Egypt, was worshipped there as well. It was most important during the Early Dynastic Period (ca.3000-ca.2500 BCE), and during the New Kingdom El-Kab across the river was more economically important. However, Hierakonpolis retained its religious and historic associations, and Tuthmose III completely rebuilt its ancient temple.
