Extension Of Primary Health Care Service And Treatment Of Tuberculosis In Swami Sivananda Centenary Charitable Hospital, Pattamadai.


Introduction

To commemorate the birth of the great INDIAN SAINT H.H SRI SWAMI SIVANANDA MAHARAJ; his worthy dispel and present World President of Divine Life Society. Gurudev Swami Chidananda Saraswathi Maharaj established this Swami Sivananda Centenary Charitable Hospital in 1987 and it started functioning since then.

It is providing both out patient and in patient services in major dispilines like Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics and out patients services in Tuberculosis, Skin, Neuro Medicine and Orthopaedics.

People from surrounding village get free service from the Hospital round the clock.

At present it has strength of 50 beds and adequate Para Medical staff and Doctors too.

Tuberculosis Services

  • Chest are chosen from general O.P.D. of this Hospital
  • General O.P.D attendance various area from 300 - 400 per day
  • No in-patient beds available for sputum positive Tuberculosis cases
  • 166-170 chest x-rays (Big plates) are done per month
  • Sputum examination per month varies from 40 to 50.
  • Out of this;16 to 18 are found sputum positive which is quite acceptable and reasonable and speaks gravity of the disease.
  • Monthly case holding varies from 45-55 who continue treatment for 6 months on short course Chemotherapy as per recommendations of RNTCP
  • All cases are coming from surrounding villages
  • Anti TB service,though started in this Hospital from 1992; it was limited to clinical examination and x-ray finding and from May 1997; sputum microscopy was introduced.
T.B and HIV findings
  • So far four cases of T.B with HIV positive have been deducted and a case of Frank Aids was found who has already expired (He was working in Bombay)
  • Other cases have all left for Bombay to avoid social stigma of HIV positive of AIDS


Assistance required by Swami Sivananda Centenary Charitable Hospital to increase T.B. Services.

  • This Hospital is running on donation from devotees of Divine Life Society and from benevolent donors.
  • Expenses on big X-ray films is much more and there by it is felt necessary to have one ODELCA CAMERA with miniature x-ray unit to reduce cost of x-ray films.
  • A standard binocular microscope is badly needed to augment sputum microscopy
  • Sufficient Anti T.B drugs required for uninterupted therapy.
  • Regular orentation training in prevention and control of Tuberculosis for the para-medical staffs and village volunteers to avoid defaulters.
  • Audio visual appliances to educate the public in prevention and control of Tuberculosis in Rural areas surrounding this Hospital.
  • No T.B. Hospitals within 60 - 70 km.For hospitalisation of T.B cases (specially sputum positives) and for provision of T.B beds in this Hospital requires more financial assistance.
