It is indeed a very special grace and dispensation to have been able to secure the very kind services of Mr. Laurie Baker, as architect, for the hospital project at Holy Pattamadai. This, I feel to be the direct benediction of revered Holy Master Swami Sivananda Gurudev.

As a result of a chance encounter with Mahatma Gandhi, Mr. Baker decided to make India his home since 1944, with a resolve to serve the rural poor. The style of architecture developed by him can only be called unique. The structures planned and built by him are simple, functional and unsophisticated; these include over a thousand houses, forty churches, industrial buildings, factories, schools and hospitals, all of them incorporating the use of natural materials abundantly available locally and employing local skills and talents. The emphasis is always on low cost, without compromising on strength and elegance. A humanitarian, he has worked among lepers, freely giving them of his time and services.

Mr. Baker is undoubtedly one of the highly esteemed personalities in the field of architecture and design in our country today.

I invoke the blessings and abundant grace of Guru Maharaj upon him and his family and wish him many more years of dedicated service to the rural community in India.

....Swami Chidananda
