Whole Language Activities





BEGINS WITH

PURPOSE: To develop classification and thinking skills
MATERIALS: 26 pieces of paper the size of index cards
PREPARATION: write a letter on each piece of paper.
TO PLAY: - Divide students into two teams - Mix up the cards - Choose one card and hold it up - Students must think of something that begins with that letter - Continue with another child and the next letter

MAKE "SUM" WORDS

PURPOSE: To practice counting and spelling words
MATERIALS: paper, pencils
TO PLAY: - On the board write the letters of the alphabet. Under each letter write the numbers one through five – repeating the pattern. It will look like this: a b c d e f g h I j k l m 1 2 3 4 5 1 2 3 4 5 1 2 3 - Have students write their spelling words in their journals. (Spelling words are on the second closet door.) - Students should assign the correct number to each letter in the words they write. Fore example: if the word is work, they will write b a c k 1. 1 3 1 - Children then add up the numbers to see how many points the word sum is. Which has the most points? Which has the fewest?

I SPY

PURPOSE: To help students learn to describe objects using adjectives and to develop students’ critical thinking skills
TO PLAY: - Say, " I spy something……" and describe the object using an adjective. (For example, I spy something red.) - Let a student try to guess what the object is. - The student who guesses the item gets to choose the next object to describe.
