The Teaching of the Master

Opening Ministry

Within a short time of his baptism Jesus felt compelled by the Spirit to go into the desert regions to consider his future. There he spent time among the wild beasts and was aware of the force of spiritual evil, tempting him.But he knew from the Scriptures that the easy way was not God's way, and he rejected it, and became aware of spiritual strengthening.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Then he returned to Capernaum with his mother, his brothers and some followers who had attached themselves to him, and remained there for some time.

Incident at Jerusalem

And when the Feast of Passover came he went up to Jerusalem, and entering the place of prayer for non-Jews in the Temple he observed men selling oxen, sheep and doves at high prices, and money changers charging exhorbitant rates (for sacrificial animals could only be bought with the official currency), and he made a whip of small cords and drove them out of the Temple along with their sheep and oxen, turned over the tables of the money-changers sending the coins rolling along the floor, and said to those who sold doves, "Take these things out of the Temple, and do not make my Father's house a public market."

This upset the Ultra-orthodox who asked, "What proof of authority can you give us for behaving like this?"

Jesus replied, "Destroy this Temple and in three days I will raise it again."

They muttered in astonishment, "They have been building this Temple for forty six years, and it isn't finished yet. How can he build it again in three days?" (But although no one realised it at the time, he was speaking of his body as a temple).

During the Feast he spiritually healed a number of people, and many began to believe in him, but Jesus did not trust himself to them because he knew what their deepest thoughts really were.

A Council Member Questions Him

One who came to him, however, was a Pharisee called Nicodemus, a member of the Jewish Council. he came by night, greatly impressed, and said, "Teacher, we know that you are a God sent teacher, for no one could do these miracles you have done unless God was with him."

Jesus replied, "I must emphasise to you that unless a man is born from above (Isaiah 44.1-5; 55.10-11) he cannot experience the Rule of God."

Nicodemus then asked, "How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter his mother's womb to be born a second time?"

Jesus responded, "I again emphasise to you that unless a man is born of water and Spirit he cannot experience the Rule of God. What is born of the flesh is flesh. What is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not be surprised that I have told you that you must be born from above. The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear it, but cannot tell from where it is coming, or where it is going. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit."

Puzzled, Nicodemus asked, "How can this be?"

Jesus replied, "Are you one of Israel's leading teachers, and do not know about this? Truly I must emphasise - we speak about what we know, and testify to what we have seen. But you do not take our testimony to heart. If I tell you earth-connected things, and you do not believe, how will you believe if we tell you heavenly things?"

"No one has been up in Heaven except the one who came down from Heaven, the Son of Man, who is a citizen of Heaven."

"Just as Moses lifted up the brass serpent in the wilderness (Numbers 21.9), so must the Son of Man be lifted up, so that whoever believes in him might avoid destruction and have eternal life."
