Early Childhood Program, Teacher, Private Licensed - Certificate
1
This program is designed for students who wish to
become a teacher in a private Early Childhood Program. The certificate
meets Title XXII Guidelines. The program requires six months work
experience or completion of Child Development 22 and 23 or Child
Development 81 and 82.
Early Childhood Program, Director, Private Licensed - Certificate
2
This program is designed for students who wish to
become a director in a private Early Childhood Program. The certificate
meets Title XXII guidelines.
A certificate from the college is given to students
completing the above units with a grade of "C" or better in each
class. See Family and Consumer Studies Department for procedures.
A director must be 18 years of age or older, have 4 years of teaching
experience, and must complete the certificate requirements.

Educational Aide Programs:
East Los Angeles College, in cooperation with local
educational agencies, enriches students for service as Education
Aides assisting classroom teachers at the elementary school level.
Three options are offered:
1. General
2. Special Education
3. Bilingual-Bicultural.
Students take the core program and then select
the option of their choice.
Family Child Care Provider
This program provides education and training for
students preparing for employment in Family Child Care programs.

Dress Making
The Dressmaking Certificate leads to employment
as an alterationist or dressmaker.
Gerontology
The program of Gerontology is the study of the process
of aging, from conception to death, and the problems associated
with aging and the aged in society. This program is designed
to prepare students for employment in the field of aging,
provide general education and training for government agencies
in meeting state regulations.
Family and Consumer Studies
The Family and Consumer Studies Certificate is designed
for students wish to prepare themselves for a foundation with
effective family living.
Fashion Design
The Fashion Design certificate leads to employment
as a fashion designer or coordinator in the ready-to-wear industry
or a custom dressmaking salon.
Fashion Merchandising
This certificate leads to employment in ready-to-wear
industry stores, specialty shops, and wholesale fashion showrooms.
Patternmaker
The Patternmaker Certificate leads to employment
as a patternmaker in the ready-to-wear industry or a custom dressmaking
salon.
Theatrical Costume Construction and Wardrobe Maintenance
The Theatrical Costume Certificate Program leads
to employment as a Theatrical Costume Designer, Wardrobe Coordinator
or Costume Constructor and Maintenance position.

Family and Consumer Studies
(Associate in Arts Degree)
Family and Consumer Studies or Home Economics is
a diversified major leading to an Associate in Arts Degree and
/or as transfer credit to a four-year college or university.
The major provides seven interest areas: nutrition, foods,
principles of clothing construction and fashion, textiles, consumer
studies, marriage and family, child development and gerontology.
The major is designed for careers and training in new skills,
enhancing one's home and surroundings, and for better use of one's
personal and community resources. It is for men and women
wishing to bring creativity and enrichment into their everyday
lives as well as for those men and women preparing for a career
in the Family and Consumer Studies field.
Transfer Programs:
Child Development
The interdisciplinary Bachelor of Arts degree in
Child Development includes a choice between two options:
Option I, which prepares students to work as administrators in
preschools, day care centers, or youth agencies or to gain entry
into professional areas other than teaching; and Option II, a
diversified undergraduate program approved for examination waiver
for the Multiple Subject credential.
Students with a background in child development
are able to pursue professional opportunities in many fields other
than teaching, including production of children's films, books,
and magazines; educational television; children's toys and educational
software; and child advocacy at local, state, and national levels.
