The Case for Agnosticism

¿ ?

When engaging in philosphical discussions, especially about the existence of God, agnostics are usually met with much indignation from both the theistic and atheistic sides of the issue. The former usually accuses an agnostic of knowing the "truth," but ignoring it. The latter usually says agnostics are scared of retribution from society, but are atheists at heart. Interestingly, both camps either claim agnostics are on their side or on the opposite side, but few give agnostics proper representation by admitting this view is a third possibility.

The problem is that there are many conflicting definitions and uses of the word "agnostic" going around, and when people are in disagreement about it, they are usually using different definitions. The purpose of these pages is to offer a clear, concise representation of the orginal, classical agnostic view, and to examine why it is the only fair and justifiable position on many topics, including the existence of God. Furthermore, essays from several prominent agnostics are offered to give a taste of what agnosticism is like in action.
