Beltaine, a wildly popular Sabbat among modern Pagans is next to come on the wheel of the year. The date for this Sabbat is May 1. Spring is in full bloom and animals are beginning to mate. Mythology here says that the God desires the Goddess, and it is at this time that the Goddess becomes pregnant from the God. This is a fertility ritual, and is a time to celebrate union, togetherness, and love.
Again, one finds an ancient Pagan activity taking place even today. The Maypole, long been used on Mayday to celebrate spring, is left over from old English village rituals. The maypole is a phallic symbol, celebrating the strength of the young God. Also popular among toady's Pagans is to decorate a tree with ribbons, tying a wish for the coming year in each bow.
Altar decorations for this Sabbat include
seasonal flowers, wood chips, poles, and rose petals. Floating candles
are also popular. Colors for this Sabbat traditionally are light blue,
lavender, pink, yellow, white, and green. Incenses are usually lilac, lily
of the valley, or wood ruff. Traditional foods are sweet wine, custards,
almonds, raisins, and anything flavored with flowers.
