The Film Collection

One thing I learned to stay away from is showing a movie of a book the students have already read.  Unless there's a specific comparison to be taught, the lesson is redundant.  We are here to teach, not show movies for fun.
I use movies often in the Multimedia Classroom, but not as illustrations of a book.  I use them for comparisons, so children can learn more by seeing another work on a specific theme.  There's double the learning there, and the teaching medium is varied.
These are some films I have used in my thirty year career, and the books I've taught with them.  (Some of these films were taught in high school and may not be suitable for younger children.)
A novel by a country's most popular author, written about 150 years ago at the very height of his popularity.  It's about a convict who redeems himself by adopting an orphan child, making that child rich, and helping that child reach maturity.

Here's a case where the movie should be shown with the book.  I couldn't find it at Amazon.com, but it's usually on the shelves at drama and Language Arts departments.  Arthur Laurents' play, Home of the Brave, can be found in Famous American Plays of the Forties.  It deals with anti-semitism during World War II. When Stanley Kramer made the film, it was only slightly rewritten to deal with race prejudice and the main character became an African American.
