The story of Battye, Wimpenny and Dawson began in Huddersfield in 1852 when Stanley Battye established a stockbroking service for local investors. William Ernest Wimpenny and Abraham Dawson founded their own stockbroking firms in Yorkshire over the course of the following fifty years.

Henry Edward Rensburg was born in The Hague in 1841. He came to Liverpool in 1863 and launched the firm of Henry E. Rensburg & Co., after being elected a member of the Liverpool Stock Exchange in 1873. In addition to his stockbroking activities, Henry Rensburg had a keen interest in music and the arts and held many offices, including that of Chairman of the Liverpool Philharmonic Society.

During the 1960’s and 1970’s a number of mergers took place and Rensburg’s Yorkshire connection was established with offices in Bradford and Leeds.

Also during the 1970’s, the firms of Battye, Wimpenny and Dawson merged to form BWD. In 1988 the holding company BWD Securities floated on the London Stock Exchange and soon after, BWD and Rensburg merged to create one of the leading investment management firms outside London.

Since then offices have been established in Belfast, Glasgow and Manchester. More recently, Rensburg acquired Nicholson Barber, the long established Sheffield stockbroker and the London-based stockbroking partnership Dennis Murphy Campbell.
