The Apia Samoa Temple
of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints
Western Samoa has one of the largest numbers of Mormons per capita of any nation in the world, 26% of the people in the country are Mormon. Originally the Church planned to build a larger temple in American Samoa, a US Trust Territory, that would serve the saints in most of the south Pacific from Fiji to Tahiti. However, the leaders of the Church decided that several smaller temples in each of the islands with large numbers of saints would better serve their needs. The Nuku'alofa, Santiago, and Sydney temples are copies of the Apia Temple.
The temple was announced for American Samoa in October 1977, the temple sight was moved to Western Samoa in April 1980.
Ground was broken and construction begun in February 1981.
The cornerstone was laid and the temple dedicated on 5-7 August 1983.
There are 3 Sealing rooms and 2 Ordinance rooms in the 13,020 square foot temple.
The spire is 75 feet tall.
The Apia Temple serves stakes in American and Western Samoa.
