  • *****The Department of Physical and Earth Sciences at JSU ( Dr. Blake Otwell) has been awarded an A.L.E.R.T. grant from the Alabama Department of Public Health to extend our monitoring capabilities on Terrapin Creek. Several new instruments will be ordered and used to increase the number of parameters monitored and a number of very complex analyses will be run by a commercial lab. This should give us an excellent database on the water quality of Terrapin Creek. Many thanks to ADPH!!!*****

  • NEW MEETING SCHEDULE: Since most members of FOTC are also members of the Sierra Club, the group will be meeting with the Coosa group of the Sierra Club in Jacksonville on the first Thursday of each month at 6:30pm in the Stone Center on the campus of JSU. The group will continue to meet at the Borden Springs VFD at 6:30 on the third Friday of each month.

  • *****Friends of Terrapin Creek has just been awarded a $5000 grant from Patagonia Corporation in California to help in our fight against Hargal Mining.*****

  • We are awaiting conformation that a species of mussel that is on the Federal Endangered Species List has been found in Terrapin Creek.

  • Recent chemical monitoring by Jacksonville State Universities' Department of Physical and Earth Sciences has indicated no evidence of the 8 RCRA heavy metals in the stream. Monitoring was conducted both above and below the Hargal site.It should be noted that it appears that Hargal has not yet started its' operation, hopefully giving us time to establish 'baseline' levels of water quality indicators. More extensive testing is planned for the very near future. This project is being supported by a Faculty Research Grant from J.S.U. Many of our members are active in the Alabama Water Watch Program and there is frequent monitoring from a number of points along the creek.
