TMI was built on the foundation laid for it in its predecessor, Sweetwater Military College founded in 1874 . The purpose in founding the school was to provide a place where young men could have good educational advantages under safe and wholesome influences. TMI was coed from 1973-1975. In the fall of 1975 it became TMI Academy and closed in 1988. In 1989 the property was purchased by a Japanese group which opened the first Japanese high school in the United States, now named Tennessee Meiji Gakuin.SEE LINK BELOW [Thanks to Charlotte Baker, Sweetwater Public Library, for the current history report].
