Atlantis - About Us

Atlantis Dalmatians – "Quality Planned Breeding, To Better the Breed."

In the spring of 1986, our household forever changed by the addition of a Dalmatian to our family. Nikki came to us from Emily Hoover, who started Atlantis Kennels in 1966. Emily's first Dalmatian came from Fred Klensch's Pacifica Line. Emily's puppy became Ch. Atlantis' Love of Pacifica. Love was her foundation bitch and our girl Nikki was a direct descendent of that daughter of Ch. Pacifica's Pride of Poseidon.

Guidelines for the Atlantis Kennels has always been to produce quality dogs with excellent temperaments and superior structure so that they may do the job that they were originally bred to do. The Casey family carries on this tradition today in all of our breedings.

Nikki started her career a little late. She had to wait while Suzi Casey finished her college degrees and the day after Suzi's graduation, Nikki was in her first dog show. It was the Dalmatian Club of America's national specialty held in Southern California in June of 1990. Nikki did very well and finished her championship with three majors.

She was bred to Ch. Merry Go Round XKE and produced only four puppies, but out of that litter came a big star - Ch. Atlantis' Sunday Best. Sunday was a star from the time she was five weeks old and we knew she would be the best of everything. Sunday started her career in January of 1993 and finished her championship in fall of 1994 in Texas. We moved to Texas in January of 1994 and settled in on five acres in New Braunfels.

Once Sunday finished, our dilemma was now; do we breed her or continue to show her? Our decision was to continue to show her and look for a stud dog. In December of 1996, the stud dog was found and arrangements were made with Joni Shoup, breeder and co-owner of Ch. Ranger of Starwood. Ranger had produced some very nice puppies with other Atlantis bitches, so it was a hope that he would do the same for Sunday. We didn't realize at the time how very well this mix would be. Sunday produced 7 puppies; no patches and all bi-lateral hearing. Out of this litter would come three champions who finished quickly – Ch. Atlantis' Never On A Sunday (Hooker), Am/Can/Int'l Ch. Starwood's Pride of Atlantis (Deacon), Am/Can/Int'l Ch. Starwood's Spirit of Atlantis (Gracie). A second re-breeding produced only one puppy who also finished, Ch. Atlantis Blessed By Starwood (Ariel).

Deacon and Gracie are owned and were shown to their championships by our friend, Ranger's co-owner, Joni Shoup, who established Starwood Dalmatians in 1990. Joni and the Starwood kids reside today in Dawsonville Georgia, and you can see more about Starwood dogs at www.starwooddals.com (web site coming in the near future).

Deacon was ranked in the Top Twenty and competed at the DCA 2000 in the Top Twenty and Best of Breed competition. Hooker, Deacon and Gracie have gone on to produce very nice puppies and will continue to do so. Hooker and Deacon each have two champions to their credit with others on the way. Deacon produced the Best in Futurity winner at 2002 DCA. Sunday won the Top Brood Bitch award. All of the grand-kids of Sunday did very well at the 2002 DCA and we are grateful to God for friendships and honors that these wonderful dogs have brought to the Casey and Shoup families.

We have kept the Atlantis Kennel name as a way to honor Emily Hoover's efforts and at her request. The Atlantis Kennels are run by Dennis and Suzan. If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact us here in Texas.
