After School Snack Attacks

When the school day ends, do your kids run home yelling--what's to eat?

After school snacks are more than just a habit, most kids really need that middle of the afternoon fuel. Kids generally eat smaller portions than adults and need to refuel more often. Eating every three to four hours helps control overeating due to hunger. The most important thing is to make wise snack choices.

Start with foods from the bottom of the pyramid. Whole grains such as bagels, graham cracker, popcorn or tortilla chips are good options. Add some fruits, vegetables or dairy products.

Try these simple and tasty ideas:

Bagels toasted and topped with low-fat cheese.

Roll a tortilla around some low-fat cheese, salsa and lettuce.

Smear graham crackers with peanut butter and serve with a glass of juice.

Afternoon snacking helps refuel kids and may also help them study better.
