The Killing Fields

by Ayesha Haqqiqa

Synopsis: The film tells the story of the fall of Cambodia to the Khmer Rouge, and an American journalist and his Cambodian translator who get caught up in the horror. The American’s stay is short, but the fate of his Cambodian friend seems to be sealed when forged documents that could get him out of the country are discovered. The rest of the film documents the despair of the American and the horror the Cambodian had to live through.

A very timely film, one that is still being screened and discussed to this day.

Sam’s performance: Since Sam was nominated for an Academy Award for his role, you have some idea how good he was. His grim determination to meet the Khmer Rouge, his anguish at not being able to save his friend, and his joy at their eventual reunion show acting at its best. FYI, it was this role that got Sam interested in the plight of Cambodian refugees, which led to his ongoing involvement with Refugees International.

Must-see scene: The end of the film, when the two reunite in a hug, will bring tears to your eyes.

Rating:

1 Sam means you’ll not be able to sit through the whole movie; 5 Sams means you’ll want to buy the film and watch it over and over!

4 Sams

This is a film to buy and to keep, but it is one that is so memorable – and so graphic in its horrors—that you will probably not want to watch it multiple times.
