Lantern Hill

By Ayesha Haqqiqa

Synopsis: Jane, who has been raised by her mother, finds that the father she thought was dead is very much alive and has asked her to come and live with him at Lantern Hill. Through dreams and the efforts of a mystical woman, Jane is able to find the cause of her parents’ separation and is the driving force behind their reconciliation.

Sam’s Performance: Sam is one of those actors who is brilliant in supporting strong women's and girls' roles. Such is the case here. Sam plays Andrew Stuart, a man who is estranged from his wife. He lives at Lantern Hill on Prince Edward Island, and sends for his daughter, Jane, to live with him. Andrew really wants his daughter to care for him, and yet he lets her make up her own mind, taking things slow with her, allowing her more freedom and responsibility than she had at her in Toronto. He is very happy when Jane decides to stay, and follows her directions that leads to the reconciliation with Robin, his wife.

Must-see scene: Again, there are a number of scenes that linger in your memory. The closing scene is tender and brings tears to your eyes. But there is a scene when Jane first goes with her father that stands out because it is funny—the brakes fail on the car, and it winds up in a pond…. The look on Sam’s face and his shouted commands as the car slowly lumbers towards the water are priceless!

Ratings go from 1 Sam (you won’t be able to sit through the whole film) to 5 Sams (You’ll want to buy it and watch it over and over)

4 Sams

Although kids are notorious for stealing scenes, Sam holds his own in this film with two strong roles for girls, complimenting and enhancing their roles. He’s a pivotal part of the plot, and plays his part well. You’ll want to watch this one more than once.
