Welcome Home (1989)

Synopsis:  A Vietnam vet, declared dead, turns up alive in a Thai refugee camp after 15 years.  The rest of the movie deals with his wife (who has remarried) and son (who he's never met), and the military's embarrassment at his sudden reappearance.  Sam plays the wife's second husband, Woody.

Sam's Performance:  As usual, Sam is the best part about this movie.  Again, he isn't in the movie nearly as much as JoBeth Williams and Kris Kristofferson.  Kris Kristofferson grumbles and mumbles throughout the entire movie, and the supporting cast isn't much better.  Sam plays an ordinary man, who has to deal with the sudden appearance of the vet, and he does so with a great deal of dignity, patience, and grace.  The scenes where Sam's character interacts with the son are priceless.

Must-see Scene:  Towards the end of the movie, when Woody talks with the son about his father, is wonderful.  Best scene in the movie.  It shows the nobleness in Sam's character and what a great father he is (which is probably why the wife chose him over her returned husband!).

Rating:  3 Sams.  The bedroom scenes (where he cuddles with his wife) and the scenes with the son are the only things that save this movie.
