BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES

                                                                                                     

                                              1.        Anka, Muhammad Hussain

 

Born on 20th September 1907 at Machh District Bolan Balochistan, son of a contractor. Worked as schoolteacher, resigned in 1932 and founded the Baloch national press, served as an editor of several Baloch newspapers. Associated with Baloch nationalist movement (1933 - 1948). Founder member of the Communist Party of Balochistan. Writer of the first Balochi national song and writer of several political artic­les and literary books, imprisoned for 20 years four month and eleven days by the British and Pakistani governments for his political convictions. Died in, 1977.

He had a strong belief for free and independent Balochistan.

Died on 3rd May 1983. 

                2.     Azat, Abdul Wahid (Jamaldini)

 

Born in 1918 at Nushki. Short story writer and famous, popular Balochi poet. Served as an editor monthly, ‘Balochi’, Karachi/Quetta. Founder of progressive literature in Balochi, died in September 1982.                                                                                                                                                                                          

                    3.      Baloch, Prince Abdul Karim       

 

Youngest son of Mir Mohammad Azam Jan Khan, the Khan of Kalat (1931 - 1933). Educated in Karachi, served as the governor of Makran province until March 1948. Led the first Baloch national resistance against the military occupation of Pakistan. Arrested and imprisoned in June 1948. Founded Ustman Gal (People’s Party) and took part in the formation of the National Awami Party. He worked as the head of the branch of the ‘Sindhi, Baloch and Pakhtun Front’ in Balochistan. Died in 1986.

 

 

                                4.   Barakzai, Dost Mohammad Khan

 

Born in the late 19th century at Bampur (Western Balochistan). His uncle, Sardar Behram Khan, founded the Baloch tribal confede­racy of the Baloch tribes in Makran. After death of his uncle, he was elected as the head of the confederacy. Extended the frontiers of the confederacy and entered into the military alliances with the Baloch tribes of Sarhad and Seistan. In 1927 - 1928 resisted the Persian invasion. Invited in Tehran by Raza Shah I in 1928 for negotiation, was arrested and executed by the order of the Persian king.                                                                        

 

 

                                                  5.    Bizenjo, Mir Ghaus Bakhsh   

 

Born at Nal in the Sardar Khail of the Bizenjo tribe. Educated in Karachi and Aligarh Muslim University. Joined the Baloch poli­tics in 1937. Served as the President of Kalat State National

Party in 1946 - 1947. Opposed the merger of Balochistan with

Pakistan. Served as the Vice President of the ‘Ustman Gal’ and

later National Awami Party. Served as governor (1972 - 1973).

Died in 11th August 1989.

 

 

6.  Bugti, Nawabzada Abdur Rehman

 

Born at Dera Bugti in 1907, the eldest son of the Bugti Tumandar (Sardar) Mehrab Khan. Served as Tehsildar in the Baloch tribal areas. Joined the ‘Anjuman Ithad-e-Balochistan’ in 1931, elected its first president of the branch in Quetta and Sibi districts. In 1934 - 1938 he led the popular Baloch uprising against the Sardari system in Bugti area. Died in 1950 in Jacobabad.

 

 

7.  Dodai, Sardar Babur Khan

 

Born in Makran, accompanied his father Mir Sohrab Khan, the founder of the Dodai Confederacy of Derajat in Eastern Balochistan. He commanded the Dodai army to pacify Bijarani-Marris. Composed several war-ballads on the Dodai-Marri wars. Died in the 16th century at Bahur a town in the south of Dera Ismail Khan, (North west frontier province in Pakistan).

 

 

8.  Durkhani Mohammad Fazil

 

Born in the 19th century at Durkhan (Kalat). He was Muslim reli­gious scholar and founded a Madrasa (religious school). Worked against the influence of European missionaries and western cul­ture. He published more than six hundred Islamic books in Balochi. He died in 1892 and was burned in his native village, Durkhan (Eastern Balochistan).

 

 

9.  Durrak, Jam

 

Born in Kalat in the mid 18th century, and lived until 1806. He was the court-poet of Nasir Khan the Great. Introduced ‘Ghazals’ and art poetry into Balochi literature, composed war-ballads on the Baloch-Afghan War (1758). He is known as ‘Malik -ul-Shuera’, buried at GurgTangi, near Lahri.

 

 

10.    Fell, D.Y.

 

Born in 1910 in Scotland (U.K.). Graduated from Oxford and served in the Indian civil service in Bombay (1934 - 1937). Entered into the Political Service and served in Balochistan and British Afghanistan. Served the Khanate as the foreign minister in 1947 — 1948.

 

Jatoi, Maulwi Hazur Bakhsh

 

Born in the mid 19th century at Taib Sanni, a village in Kachhi province of the Khanate. Educated in Durkhan Madrasa and later served as a theologian in his village. Died in the early 20th century. He was a religious Balochi poet. He translated several books on Islam from Arabic into Balochi.

 

 

Kolachi-Baloch, Habibullah Khan

 

Born in 1907 at Jhok Gomal, a Baloch village on the ethnic frontier of Balochistan and Pakhtun areas of NWFP. His father Sardar Rabnawaz took part in anti British activities in 1918, imprisoned and lost his landed property. Organizer of the ‘Anjuman’ in Dera Ismail Khan (along with his brother, Sardar Abdur Rahman Khan). Imprisoned by the British for his political activities. Elected as the president of Awami League, Dera Ismail Khan. Died on 12th December 1974.

 

 

13.      Korai, Ghulam Rasul Khan

 

Born in the mid 19th century in Dera Ghazi khan (eastern Balochistan). Founded the Ittahad-e-Balochan in 1930, which was merged with the Anjuman in 1931. Wrote on the Baloch history. Before entering into politics, served as a judge in British India. Died in 1938 at his native village ‘Kot Ghulam Rasul’, Dera Ghazi Khan.

 

14.         Kurd, Mir Abdul Aziz

 

Born in 1904 at Mastung. His father was a government officer in Kalat. Received early education at Mastung. Organized the ‘Young Baloch Party’ influenced by the ‘Young Turks’. Joined the Anjuman under the leadership of Magassi. In 1930 and became the first General Secretary of the organization. In 1937 re­organized the Anjuman under the new name ‘Kalat State National Party and was elected its president. A strong supporter of an independent Balochistan. Published the first map of ‘Greater’ or United Balochistan in 1933. Died in 1979.                                                                                                                                                                                                              

                        15.         Magassi, Mir Mohammad Yusuf Ali Khan Aziz  

 

Born in January 1908 at Jhal. His father was the Tumandar (Sardar) of Magassi tribe. Received his education from private tutors. Entered in politics in 1920. Founded the Anjuman and was elected its first president in 1930. Organized all India Baloch conferences at Jacobabad and Hyderabad in 1932, 1933.

Lived in exile in London in 1934. Influenced by the teachings of the Young Turks, Marx-Lenin and Mahmud Tarzi. Die& in 1935 in an earthquake at Quetta.

 

 

16.    Marri, Rahm Ali

 

Born in the 19th century, Baloch epic shair (poet) took part in the Marri uprising (1919 — 1920) against the British imperialism under the leadership of Nawab Khair Bakhsh Khan Marri I. Founded a revolutionary trend in Balochi literature. Wrote more than fifty thousand verses against colonialism and Sardari system. Died in the 1930s. He is respected as a poet of awakening. Part of his poetry has been collected and published by Mir Mitha Khan Marri, a Baloch writer.

17.    Marri, Sher Mohammad (General Sherov)

 

Born in 1924 at Kohlu. Educated in Sibi and joined politics in 1945. Founded ‘Mazlum Party’ in the Baloch Tribal areas of Sulaiman Mountains aiming to oppose Sardari system and to support an independent Balochistan. He works for the ‘Baloch People’s Liberation Front’, headed by Nawab Khair Bakhsh Khan Marri. He took part in the Baloch national resistance movement in the Marri Tribal area (1962—1968).

Died on 11th May 1993 in Delhi buried in Kolu, Balochistan.

18.    Nasir, Mir Gul Khan

 

Born in 1910 at Nushki (Balochistan). Served as editor of several literary magazines. Joined civil service of the Khanate, took part in the Baloch politics (1937 - 1978), and worked as the education minister in Balochistan (1972 - 1973). Imprisoned by the British and Pakistani governments because of his political views. He was poet of Balochi and Urdu. Died in December1986.

 

 

19.    Nizamani, Kadir Kbakhsh

 

Born at Tando Kaisar (Sindh), in a Baloch family. Educated in Moscow.

He is one of the founders of the Communist Party in Balochistan and Sindh

Harri Party.

Took part in the first Baloch resistance movement in 1948.

He has been the editor of several Baloch newspapers.

Lives in exile in London and published ‘Azad Balochistan’,

the organ of the liberation organization of Balochistan, headed by Sardar

Attah ullah Khan Mengal, the former chief minister of Balochistan.

 

20.    Nusherwani, Nawabzada Shahbaz Khan

 

Born in Kharan city, son of Nawab Ameer Mohammad Yakub Khan.

Served as the President of Kalat state National Party in 1937 -1938.

Joined the Baloch League in 1946. Joined Muslim League in 1948

and People’s Party in 1974.

 

21.    Panah, Malik Mohammad

 

Born in Kalat state. Educated in Balochistan, served in the Kalat

government’s service until 1948. Joined the first Baloch national

resistance movement headed by Prince Abdul Karim in1948.

Arrested and imprisoned. Served as an editor of ‘Nawai Watan’, Quetta.

Writer of Balochi. Died in 1982.

 

 

22.    Shams Shah, Sir Nawab Syed

 

Born at ‘Pir Jatan, a village in Gujrat (Punjab) in the mid 19th century.

Started his career as ‘Patwari’. In 1920, appointed the Prime Minister of the

Khanate by the British Government of India. He was known a tyrant prime

minister in Balochistan and was removed by the strong opposition of the

Anjuman in 1932. Died in his native province, Punjab in British India.

 

 

        23.      Shorish, Abdul Karim 

 

Born in 1912 at Mastung. The founding member of the ‘Baloch

Young Party, 'Anjuman’ and ‘Kalat National Party’ and Ustman Gal.

Editor of monthly ‘Noken Daur’ (Balochi), Quetta. Writer of

Balochi, Urdu and Brahui.

Died and buried in Quetta on 14December 1986.
