The Israeli Prime Minister, Binyamin Netanyahu, has sent a message of support to a convicted American spy, Jonathan Pollard, who is serving a life sentence in a United States jail.

The Communications Minister ,Limor Livnat, is to deliver a letter in person during a visit to Pollard on Tuesday.

He was quoted by Israel radio as saying this was the first direct message from the prime minister.

The minister said the time had come for Israel to put the issue on the agenda with the Americans.

Pollard, an American Jew, was granted Israeli citizenship last year.

He was convicted of passing classified information to Israel in 1986.
