In 1986, I discovered the Merkur XR4Ti, a 3-door sports coupe sold from 1985-1989 at select Lincoln-Mercury dealers. I watched it on TV as it dominated the SCCA Trans-Am series. The XR4Ti is powered by a fuel-injected, turbocharged 2.3 liter four, producing 175 hp with a 5-speed manual transmission. Unfortunately, with the optional 3-speed automatic, it only produces 140 hp, and neither version was ever intercooled. It is rear wheel drive, has four-wheel independent suspension and carries a huge list of "options" as standard equipment. It is based on Ford of Europe's highly successful Sierra, and resembles the performance model, the XR4i.
I believe the XR4Ti is one of the most overlooked cars for performance potential. Good examples are reasonably priced, and aftermarket parts are becoming more abundant.
