WASTE TECHNOLOGY CENTRE
BRIEF INFORMATION

  BACKGROUND
The Waste Technology Centre or WTC was officially formed in July 1996. The members consist of 5 academic staffs specialising in environment from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Faculty of  Engineering, Universiti Putra Malaysia. Early contract research projects undertaken by the WTC was in 1996, namely, the joint venture research projects with Taliworks Consortium Sdn Bhd and Pollution Engineering Sdn Bhd.

Through the years, WTC has grown to be a centre for excellence in environmental management and waste technology.  WTC carried out consultancies, feasibility studies, pollution control, EIA and testing for environmental products. The centre also organises specialised training course and seminars on wastewater treatment.

  PRODUCT
The WTC has been well known to Jabatan Perkhidmatan Pembetungan and IWK in terms of its reputation as a leading centre for development of sewage treatment and septic tank testing. The WTC has produced a patented product known as BioFil Technology which is being commercialised through joint venture basis with private sectors.

WTC has also provided many free advisory services on environment, testing and analytical services to several environmental companies.

AREAS OF EXPERTISE
The WTC is able to offer the specialist, professional and experts on the following:
 

 Sewage treatment
 Industrial effluent treatment
 Membrane filtration in water treatment
 Sludge treatment and disposal
 Water Treatment Processes
 Toxic and hazardous waste management

  FACILITIES
Water quality analysis:             BOD, COD, TSS equipment, Turbidity meter
Wastewater quality analysis:    AAS, GC, HPLC, TOC, spectrophotometer.
Air quality analysis:                 TSP/dust meter, SO2, NO2 and CO meter.
Kinetic studies:                         Lab and pilot scale biological reactor
Filtration studies:                      Lab scale dual media system, membrane unit.
 

  TECHNOLOGY EXHIBITION
Involve at the technology exhibition at national level, 2 times (1996) and 4 times (1997). It serves to market the UPM and WTC activities.
