PROFANITY

I LIKE THE INTERVIEWS THAT HAVE SO MANY TO SAY. MARTL IS ONE OF THOSE ARTIST AND HE DOESN'T AFRAID TO SUPPORT HIS BELIEVES AND IDEAS. I THINK METAL MUSIC NEEDS ARTISTS WITH OPINION AND NOT JUST MUSICIANS! SO PROCEED WITH THE INTERVIEW...

1.TELL US IN A FEW WORDS THE MOST IMPORTANT MOMENTS OF THE BAND'S HISTORY. WHICH IS TODAY'S LINE UP?
Martl: Hi Nick, first thank you very much for your support, it is cool to do this inti! The band was founded 1993 by Tom (guit, vox) as a four pice band. After two demotapes, 1994 and 1995 the line-up splitted cause Tom wanted more brutality in the music. With Armin (drums) an me (bass) we built on 95/96 a complete new line-up. Only a familiar rest of mine stopped this trio. Daniel, a good friend of us played the bass guitar till I came back after three years. Since 2000 we are the old trio and a constant line up again.
2.WHY HAVE YOU NAMED THE BAND PROFANITY? WHAT DID YOU WANT TO STATE BY THAT AND WHICH WERE YOUR CRITERIA WHLE SELECTING A BAND NAME?
Martl: It was very simple at the beginning: it sounds cool! But after all this years in Profanity, we are very happy with this name. It is like the one and only name for our band and our music. In my opinon thisn is a very strong name for our vision of extreme music and for our lyrics.
3.WHICH ARE THE BAND'S INFLUENCES? NAME SOME OF YOUR MOST BELOVED BANDS AND NAME SOME OF THE ALBUMS YOU THINK (DESPITE GENRE) ARE CULT IN THE METAL SOCIETY.
Martl: We like a lot of different bands, mostly the US-Bands. In the early days our influence were Cannibal Coprse, Monstrosity, Death, Nocturnus Suffocation, Cynic, Atheist and many more. But now we want to write "our" music, we don`t look what other bands do, how their songwriting is, they are not longer an influence. We like them as very cool music, but not longer as influences, as faves of course! I think Chuck Schuldiners music is cult, also the old Carcass, Atheist and Cynic. But in brutal Death Metal there is for me only one band and one album god: Suffocations Pierced from within. This album includes thousands of moments of extreme and intensive feelings, it is wonderfull.
4.YOU SAY IN YOUR BAND BIO THAT YOU WANTED MORE AND MORE BRUTALITY IN YOUR MUSIC...WHY IS THAT? I MEAN EACH DAY MORE AND MORE PEOPLE LISTEN TO EXTREME MUSIC. WHERE DO YOU THINK IS MELODY? DON'T WE HAVE ANY "NEED" FOR MELODY?
Martl: This is a very good question! I think the word "brutal" is more and more a trend. Many bands praise their music as brutal and technical, mostly it is "normal Death Metal, very cool and good, but not "normal" or oldschool. Brutality is for us more extreme feelings in our music. It is more the extreme and sick part in the music, not only blastbeats - this is very boring in my eyes. The different moments Suffocation created are very brutal and very extreme as one and sometime melodic too. Today tom, our guitarplayer said he has new melodic riffs, I look forward to hear it tomorrow cause this is a new part in our music. It is good, this could be a part of "brutality" in our sound. What we "need" you ask me? I don`t know! Every band should ask this themself. Generally I think more intensive moments, not stupid blasts, more different feelings in a song. This is what we want to do in our music.
5.SOME PEOPLE THINK THAT THE FASTER THEY PLAY THE MORE EXTREME THEIR MUSIC IS. SO, ALL THEY DO IS TRY TO PLAY FASTER AND FASTER AND THIS CREATES A PROBLEM, A "GAP" IF YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN IN THEIR COMPOSITIONS. WHAT DO    YOU HAVE TO SAY ON THAT?
Martl: You are absolutly right! It is very boring to want to be only the fastest band. It is cool and certainly important to play fast parts, but not only. Only fulltime fast blastbeats on an album is okay, but this is not my music. I like Morbid Angels last album very much, exspecially the slow parts, very powerfull, very intensive! The mix between blastbeats, slowly and powerfull moments and some melodic parts is more than only fast fingers.
6.HOW MANY RELEASES DO YOU HAVE? CAN YOU TELL US SOME GENERAL THINGS ABOUT EACH ONE OF THEMA ND ESPECIALLY CONCETRATE ON YOUR LAST ONE? WHAT DO YOU OBSERVE? IN WHICH FIELDS HAVE YOU PROGRESSED?
Martl: Two demotapes, two 7", one as split with Lividity and two albums. Since the demos we try to write more and more extreme and intensive music. We learn more and more about songstructures - feel free and visit our website on www.profanity.de and download free MP3s from the releases to see or better hear our progression. It is difficult to explane music for me.
7.WHY DID YOU HAVE SO MANY CHANGES IN THE LINE UP?
Martl: Oh, I think there are not so much. The first line up was 1993 a mix of freaks with different music-faves. Tom want a brutal band, so he splitted the band and searched for new members. 1996 I became a member of Profanity. Amrin one year later. This was the important line up change, cause after thia time we played extreme music. 1997 I must left the band caused by familiar reasons and Daniel, a good friend played the bass. Since 2000 I came back and Daniel wanted to a thrashband. thats all - okay, every change costs time by learning the stuff, but it is good for the music. We checked some friends for the second guitar, but we choose to play as a trio since years.
8.WHICH WERE THE REACTIONS OF THE FANS AND PRESS ON YOUR LATEST RELEASE? WHICH SONG OF YOURS DO YOU THINK IS THE MOST IDEAL TO REPRESENT YOUR WORK? HOW DID YOU GET IN TOUCH WITH CUDGEL AGENCY?
Martl: For me as a bandmember I feel very satiesfied by the reactions, I can`t remember a bad review. I can`t be neutral because I like my own music and I feel great when I hear or see that others like it too. The coolest compliments we get during a live-show. Every freak in front of the stage is part of our spirit and gives us power and energie to playing more intensive, this feeling is like a big family, "together as one" on a concert is wonderfull. We played sometimes in dutch and after one show a guy told us: "I can feel the deathmetal when I saw you on stage" - hey, these words are the gold of underground for us!!! From "Slaughtering Thoughts" maybe it is Drowned in dusk an Giants of Void Vortex. We spoke with Invasion Rec. but they split, so we ask Cudgel if we could play on the FTC-Festival, by that way we singed by them.
9.YOU HAVE DONE MANY LIVE SHOWS WITH BIG NAMES. CAN YOU SHARE YOUR EXPERIENCIES WITH US? WHO WERE THE FRIENDLIEST WITH YOU?
Martl: The gig with Cannibal Corpse 1998 in Munic was cool, the guys of Corpse were friendly but it was hard cause Armin has broken his shoulder after the gig. During the FTC III Festival we talked to the guys from Monstrosity, I like this band very much so I was very suprised that they watn to buy my original Imperal Doom-shirt, haha. Last tour with Cryptopsy, Haemorrhage and Spwan all freakrs were cool. With Haemorrhage we stay still in good contact. There are many bands we stay in contact, not really the super big ones, more the cool ones we like really.
10.WHAT ARE YOUR LYRICS TALKING ABOUT? REAL LIFE OR FANTASY THEMES?
Martl: Both. I write often about a figure called Morething. This being isn`t real, it is like a double of each human being. Your deeds in you life change your personal Morething and one time it          is the judge over these deeds,...
11.WHICH OTHER METAL GENRE DO YOU FIND INTERESTING AND YOU'D LIKE TO INVOLVE WITH?
Martl: I like many metal genres. It would be boreing to listen only death metal, at the moment I listen to Annihilator. But not only metal music - I like many computer games-sounds. C 64, Amiga or PC-sounds are very cool in my ears. We  play our music without thoughts to involve other elements, if it flows natural it is okay but we do not navigate it.
12.HOW ARE YOU THINKING TO PROMOTE YOUR WORK? WHICH ARE YOUR FUTURE PLANS?
Martl: By writing good music! We play very often live and work very hard for our band. For some months we split from Cudgel Agency becuase  we were not longer satisfied with them, at the moment we are looking for a new label. Our future plans? To write better music and showing a very intensive liveperformance to more people!
13.IF YOU WEREN'T ABLE TO COMPOSE MUSIC, WHAT ELSE WOULD YOU LIKE TO DO?
Martl: I guess I would painting. Yes, I would do! I like art and intensive feelings in pictures.
14.WHICH IS THE WORST AND WHICH IS THE BEST REVIEW YOU HAVE RECEIVED?
Martl: Oh, there so much, but I can remeber one guy who wrote we would play old school death metal, it sounds like an other band he was reviewing, but that is okay. the last album got very good reviews in the press, but the last live-review in the german RockHard was cool for us - they saw our power on stage.
15.WHICH DO YOU THINK IS THE BEST AND WHICH THE WORST PART IN YOUR MUSIC? WHERE DO YOU THINK YOU NEED IMPROVEMENT?
Martl: Hmm, a good question... . I think the best part is that we are three friends with the same motive to write and feel this music and we show this live. we have the skills use our instruments for many feelings and different moments in our music, but we must work to create "easier" strucures in our songs. This is what we try to do during the songwriting for "HateRed Hell Within".
16.MANY EXTREME METAL BANDS EXPRESS RACISTIC IDEOLOGIES. WHICH ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THAT?
Martl: This is something I can`t understand! Music is a powerfull and positive gift, racistic ideoligies kill all kind of music and make them poor! I don`t like every political or religious ideoligies or statements in music. It is dangerous and stupid. Every man should have enough brain to build his one peacefull spirit without music. Extreme music needs no extreme ideoligies if it is real extreme!!!
17.HAVE YOU READ ANY INTERESTING BOOKS LATELY? HAVE YOU WATCHED AN INTERESTING MOVIE?
Martl: Tha last book I have read was The lord of the rings as a little boy. I read a lot of comis, sometimes too much or playing computergames like Baldurs Gate. An Interesting movie....? Planet of apes. I like the old silms, so I watched the film on dvd - it is cool, good elements and dialogs between men and apes, very intersting. I should read more books, not only comics or fanzines, but I need more time, maybe as an old man.
18.IF SOMEDAY YOU HAD THE CHANCE TO MEET THE CREATURE THAT CREATED THE UNIVERSE, WHICH WOULD YOUR BIGGEST QUESTION BE?
Martl: I don`t want meet this creature. Not if I must. My biggest question? At this moment probably only stupid questions as: Do you like Bud Spencer and Suffocation? Sorry, I don`t know now - I am satisfied with my life.
19.IF TIME TRAVEL WAS POSSIBLE, WHICH HISTORICAL PERIOD WOULD YOU LIKE TO VISIT AND WHY? WHAT WOULD YOU MISS THE MOST FROM OUR TIME?
Martl: If it would be possible I want to visit Tolkiens middle-earth or the real story about Jesus.
19.WHICH IS MAN'S BIGGEST TEMPTATION?
  • Martl: Knowing all, power and playing gods.
20.WHAT PROLOGUE AND TITLE WOULD YOU LIKE THIS INTERVIEW TO HAVE?
Martl: Oh no, this is your turn, ladies first *ggg*
21.THANK YOU!HAVE I FORGOT TO ASK YOU ANYTHING AND YOU'D LIKE TO MENTION?
Martl: I thank you very much for this cool inti, it made fun to answer it. Thanx for your support!!! For more infos please check our website: www.profanity.de - watch out for our new stuff on "HateRed Hell Within". Best wishes to you and all readers from Behind The Veil ezine.
