About the sponsor Professor
Larry Baum
“I am from Los Angeles, USA, and now live in Hong Kong,
where I am a biology professor studying Alzheimer's disease and cancer.
Through my job I may be able to improve peoples' lives, but only in a narrow
area. When I came up with ideas in other fields, I would keep them in a
journal but didn't have time to follow through with them. Living in such
a small place, which is a crossroads of trade, the usefulness of the internet
to connect people around the world is apparent. That's why I
started IdeaExplore, as a way to spread ideas more widely so that some might
be used. For fun, I like to hike in the Hong Kong countryside and
contribute silly items to topfive.com”.

This
issue is sponsored by Prof. Lary Baum, publisher of IdeaExplore. He is very much
dedicated to encouraging the development of new ideas and spends his own money
to give U$100 awards to the best and consistent new ideas. Needless to say
Prof. Baum’s services are exceptionally outstanding and many new ideas from IdeaExplore will help the
progress of our society. Please visit his site and post your new ideas.
I
Due to several reasons the December 2002 issue of Patrika couldn’t be published. The main reason was that I was held up in India and virtually with no access to the net. So I decided to start a new series of Patrika. The present issue is for the first quarter of 2003, i.e., from January to March 2003. The next issue, therefore will be for the second quarter of 2003, i.e., from April to June 2003 and so on.. We have completed 4 years now although some issues were not published regularly. Nevertheless we are encouraged by the responses from readers, sponsors and the editorial board members.
Other major reasons that contributed to keep this publication going and alive are:
· Voluntary labour and time so generously given by Smt. Nidadavolu Malathi, Dr Jonnalagadda Rajagopala Rao (Vasundhara) and Dr Durvasula,
· Quick and timely completion of typesetting work by D Chandrasekhar Rao (Satyam Grapics, Amadalavalasa) who has now become a much sought after specialist designer and typesetter for many local newspapers and publications,
·
Very
generous and quick permission to reprint articles from Rachana by
Sai and the Katha series by Vasireddy Naveen. Special thanks are to Kalipatnam
Rama Rao and NagnaMuni for their generous and blank permission to reprint
their stories. We hope to publish a few stories by Nagnamuni from the
next issue.
We are very grateful to them for their help.
Two major financial costs of this publication are: typesetting costs and the payments for various awards. Neither can be minimised any further without reducing the quality of Patrika. Readers may be aware of the shoddy formats used by other Telugu webzines. To help us maintain the current quality, we request readers and supporters to sponsor an award or two per year. Details are given below. Alternatively you may email us your opinions and suggestions. Please keep in mind that the average Telugu writer doesn’t get paid by many Telugu publications and those who make payments are either less regular or make modest payments in the vicinity of Rs.200 per article.

In this issue there is one KathaPuraskaram award winning story: Chalamayya Sastry’s Vanaprastam, donated by Yalamanchali Uma. Congratulations to Sastry garu.
In addition there is a classic long story, in four parts to reduce the downloading time, by Sri Kalipatnam, a very touching story by Smt. J Ramalakshmi and an interesting satire by MounaPravas. Hope that you will enjoy this issue.
Katha-Puraskaram
& Protsaham Awards
(Revised January 2003)
Readers may be aware that many Telugu publications pay very little or no honorariums at all. To encourage quality writing and also promising new writers from India, we are giving two types of awards with honorariums between Rs.250 to Rs.500 to writers currently residing in India.. e-Telugu Patrika would be the sole copyright holder of all such award winning stories. Permission to reproduce them, in any form, should be obtained from the Managing Editor.
I. Katha-Puraskaram Award: In some respects this award is similar to the well-known Katha-Peetham award in Rachana and is administered in Rachana and also in e-Patrika by Vasundhara. Substantially original, unpublished and high quality stories are given this award, normally between Rs.350 to Rs.500. Articles for this award should be posted to: Vasundhara, Katha Puraskarm, Quarter No. 515, R.R.L. Colony, Bhubaneswar-751 013, Orissa. Some who won this award are: P S Bala, MSV Ganga Raju, Ponnada Kumar, K V Vijayalakshmi and Dr Ravi Kumar.
II. Katha Protsaham Award:
To encourage good quality story writing, honorariums between Rs.200
to Rs.300 are awarded to hitherto unpublished original stories and
essays. Articles should be sent to Vasundhara, Quarter No. 515, R.R.L. Colony,
Bhubaneswar-751 013, Orissa or to D Chandrasekhara Rao, Associate Editor,
e-Telugu Patrika, Lakshmi Cinema Buildings, Amadalavalasa-532 185. We have
given this award, retrospectively, to Yantrabhutam
(see the previous issue) by Ponnada Umamaheswara
Rao.
********
Patrika doesn't have any income. Therefore we appeal to our readers and well-wishers for donations to the Katha-Puraskaram and Protsaham awards. If you wish to donate send an email message to: awards or write to D Chandrasekhara Rao, Associate Editor, e-Telugu Patrika, Lakshmi Cinema Buildings, Amadalavalasa-532 185.
There are three schemes of donations: U$25 (A$30) or U$45 (A$60) or U$ 100 (A$150).
I. The minimum is Rs.750 (About Rs.500 for Puraskaram or about Rs250 for two Protsaham awards, and the balance to meet our Indian transaction and part typesetting costs). In foreign currency this is about U$25 (U$18 + U$7 for bank charges) or A$30. These donations may be made, for example, in the name of a dear relative, friend, teacher etc. We will publish a photograph and a brief write up supplied by you on that person. We are also willing to publish the photographs of the donors and recipients of the award.
II. One may donate for one Puraskaram or two Protsaham awards and also sponsor an entire issue of Patrika for U$45 or A$60. The balance of the award will be used to partly meet our typesetting costs in India for that issue. We are grateful to Smt Garre Lalitha (USA), Professor Vemuri Venkateswara Rao (USA) and Professor Larry Baum (IdeaExplore) for being the first of such sponsors.
III. If a donor supports Katha-Puraskaram award in all the 4 issues in a
year, with the permission of the authors we will supply the reformatted typeset
material (PageMaker and PDF files) on a CD to encourage the donors to publish,
at their expense, as a book or as CDs, of course dedicated to the
nominated person. This is an exciting and a new opportunity to do something
worthwhile to permanently preserve the memory of someone you love and respect.
In general, such publications are good for distribution among relatives and
friends or as a donation to the local Telugu association to raise funds. The
donation for this scheme is U$100 or A$150, including
the cost of making the master CD and its postage. We are grateful to Smt
Yalamanchali Uma (USA) for being the
first of such sponsors.
The following supporters of Patrika have offered Puraskaram donations:
Dr *Adusumilli Hanumayya (in memory of his late
father-in-law Sri Veeramahaneni Lakshmi Narayana), Mr *John Lingutla, Mr
Varigonda Subba Rao, Dr *Durvasula Murthy, Mr Kodur Ramamurthy (in memory of
his late father) , Mr C. Viswanatham, Dr K. Hemachandara Rao, Dr P.
Lakshminarayana (in memory of his mother) and a couple of anonymous persons.
