Introduction
Bhaskar Rao (Sydney)

This issue contains some classic stories by Nidadavolu Malathi, Chaganti Thulasi, Sujatha Srinivas etc and also the second KathaPuraskaram winning story by Mr MSV Ganga Raju. We are sure that you will enjoy these stories.

We now come to an important problem concerning admissions into the western universities and exploitation by some agents and their fabricated lies about part-time jobs in the western countries.

We have spent 4 months in India (September to December 2001) and visited a few universities. Often we were asked for advice on admissions into the Australian and other western universities. While there are many good universities in the west, it may be noted that aspiring students must investigate the reputation of a university and be satisfied with the quality of staff in the department into which they are seeking admission. If you are a postgraduate or a research student ask for a list of recent research publications of the departmental staff members. In general many departments publish their annual reports and list the recent publications of their staff members.

There are many agents in India to recruit students for the less well-known and smaller universities of the west. Most reputed and larger universities don’t employ such agents. In general these agents give you somewhat exaggerated descriptions of their institution(s) and go overboard to emphasise that part-time jobs are plenty in the west. In general this is not true. It will be unwise if a student doesn’t have adequate financial resources to see through his/her studies.

In certain parts of the west (Scandinavian countries, Germany etc) the tuition fees for international students is modest or even nil. Some agents are aware of this and seem to have tempted scores of students into paying very high consultation fees (as much as Rs.25,000) for providing information and some other minor services. Students are warned that such high fees by these agents is unwarranted. Therefore we have included a Letter to the Editor from Gopu Sridhar, a student now in Sweden, on how his agent literally robbed him of Rs.25,000 and gave him a totally misleading account about part-time jobs in Sweden. We hope that this letter will save many other innocent students from such exploitation.

Finally, congratulations to Srinivasa phani kumar (USA) for winning the book prize. A copy of Katha-2000 will be posted to him soon. For the time being and until a further announcement we are suspending the book prize award for those signing the Guest Book. We hope that readers will sign and comment as usual.

Katha-Puraskaram Awards

In an earlier issue we said that Patrika has become more of a digest. This doesn't mean that we are not interested in original contributions. It is just that we are not getting quality contributions. To encourage promising writers from India, we are now introducing small honorariums of Rs.500 for writers currently residing in India. This scheme, Katha-Puraskaram, is similar to the well known Katha-Peetham award in Rachana and is administered there by Vasundhara.

Katha-Puraskaram award is given only to original and hither to unpublished articles i.e., stories, essays or poems. We are glad to say that Vasundhara agreed to conduct the Katha-Puraskaram awards. Therefore your literary contributions should be sent directly to: Vasundhara, Katha Puraskarm, Quarter No. 515, R.R.L. Colony, Bhubaneswar-751 013, Orissa.

Patrika doesn't have any income. Therefore we appeal to our readers and well-wishers for donations to the Katha-Puraskaram awards. The minimum is Rs.650 (Rs.500 for the award and the balance to meet our Indian transaction costs). In foreign currency this is U$22 (U$15 + U$7 for bank charges) or A$30. These donations may be made, for example, in the name of a dear relative, friend, teacher etc. We will publish a photograph and a brief write up supplied by you on that person. We are also willing to publish the photographs of the donor and the recipient of the award.

Furthermore, if a donor supports Katha-Puraskaram (U$70 or A$120) in all the 4 issues in a year, with the permission of the authors, we can supply the typeset material on a CD to encourage the donor to publish as a book or booklet, of course dedicated to the nominated person. This is an exciting and a new opportunity to do something worthwhile to permanently preserve the memory of someone you love and respect. Finally one may give one Puraskaram award and sponsor an entire issue of Patrika for U$50 or A$100.) The balance of the award will be used to partly meet our typesetting costs in India for that issue.

The following supporters of Patrika have already agreed to offer donations:

Dr *Adusumilli Hanumayya (in memory of his late father-in-law Sri Veeramahaneni Lakshmi Narayana), Mr *John Lingutla, Mr Varigonda Subba Rao, Dr *Durvasula Murthy, Mr Kodur Ramamurthy (in memory of his late father) , Mr C. Viswanatham, Dr K. Hemachandara Rao, Dr P. Lakshminarayana (in memory of his mother), Lalitha Garre (USA), Uma Yalamanchali (USA) and a couple of anonymous persons.

We are specially grateful to Smt. Lalitha and Smt. Uma for their generous donations of U$50 each. The next two issues of Patrika will be sponsored by them.

If you wish to make a donation, please contact me: Bhaskar Rao.
