Preparation for Acetylene
Discussion : Acetylene is used by many manufacture companies. They use Acetylene (C2H2) to melt and cut the iron. Here you see small set up for acetylene. We are going to use Calcium Carbide (CaC2) and Distilled water (H2O). It is spontaneous and Exothermic Reaction.
Safety Procedure: In this reaction, we are going to use flask. when CaC2 is placed in water (flask) ,gas will release rapidly. so use some required calculation by using volume of flask and quantity of CaC2. USE THIS EQUATION : PV= nRT to calculate the volume of the flask required. Always put safety goggles on.
Material: Distilled Water (H2O) ,Calcium Carbide (CaC2) ,Flask ,and Bent Glass tube ,Rubber stopper with a hole.
Procedure: Set up all equipment as shown above. Now place some
Distilled Water into Flask. Then carefully add some Calcium carbide into flask.
As soon as you put calcium carbide, fix the rubber stopper as shown above in
figure 2. As
the reaction start, you will feel some kind of smell. Now glow wood splint
and burn the gas then observe.
Observation: When gas burn, combustion reaction occurs. This reaction
indicates Acetylene gas has been produced. It Produce CO2 and H2O
if its get enough O2.
Reactions:
CaC2 + H2O
CaO + C2H2
C2H2 + O2 CO2 + H2O
Now CaO ( Calcium Oxide) will left in flask. Discard this substance in sink when all gas vaporize.
