John Jr. was the oldest son of John Sr. He was studious learned easily had a quick retentive memory. He loved books and had no taste for farming. He held public office probably in his father's court. One of his duties was to excute court orders. Unpaid debts were punishable by imprisonment. John Jr gave a debtor time to get help to starve off foreclosure. The debtor diapeared with all moveable assets. It took all of John's means and some of his father's to square matters.
The act of his favorite son embarassed the Judge who had a reputation for strictness in legal maters. The Judge insistd that John Jr. join his brother in law who with others was preparing to move to Ohio. The trip toC leveland took 3 weeks. The group settled 5 miles east and 1 mile south of the lake shore in the forest.
John had apparently expected assistance from his father.he was to proud to write as the years passed feelings of injustice increased. He was never heard to mrtion his father's name.As he grew older his health failed, he never thought on the morrow leaving that duty to his wife and children.
John Jr first married Elcy Green.Of this marriage there was one child Hampton Green Armstrong.who was raised on the Armstrong homestead. He died at the age of 31 in New Jersey, unmarried.John Jr married Elizabeth Shafer about 1808 of this marriage there was one daughter Margaret Sarah Armstrong. After the death of Elizabeth, John married Phoebe Stewart. In about 1816 John Jr and Phoebe with 3 of their small children set out for Cleveland,Ohio. The children of John's earlier marriages Hampton,a boy of about 11 and a girl Margaret about 6 remained in New Jersey with their grandparents.
