The pinnacle of Centauri warship designers, the Primus-class Heavy Cruiser was built with the intention of engaging in fleet actions against superior formations and emerging victorious. Because of the massive size of the Centauri interstellar empire, the Republic was unable to mass produce major warships on the scale needed and therefore was forced to rely on single vessels in the role of system defense. The best answer was the Primus Heavy Cruiser. Armed with seven different weapon systems built to contend with anything from Starfighter assaults to fleet actions against several enemy warships, the Heavy Cruiser could dominate a hostile star system and deliver enough ground forces to pacify a planet in enemy hands. In the event that the planet could not be taken or retaken, a Heavy Cruiser's captain could order the obliteration of a planet from orbit using the Mass Driver system. However, the weapon was universally outlawed in 2071 and was not used again until 2260 during the Centauri bombardment of Narn. During the Narn-Centauri War, the Primus Heavy Cruiser was demonstrated to be the most powerful vessel deployed on either side of the fight, the guns of these vessels proving more than a match for the smaller and less well-armed Narn vessels sent to combat them. In the final assault against Narn, five of these massive craft were able to break the system defenses and fire on the planet, shrugging off most return fire while devestating the orbital defenses and laying waste to the surface of Narn while sustaining minor hull damage and loss of gravity aboard the Cruiser Reknown. The one major drawback to the design of the Primus Cruiser is the lack of large numbers of escort Starfighters. Built more with the planetary assault role in mind, the Primus was equipped with a large number of shuttles and barracks in favor of hangars for the deadly Sentri and Rutarian Starfighters. Becuase of this, these massive vessel can easily fall prey to massed Starfighter tactics and the use of smaller Capital Ships in the rear arcs of the Centauri craft. To counter this, Centauri fleets can often be seen acting around a Heavy Cruiser with several smaller Vorchan Light Cruisers in escort positions, able to turn about and engage any threats to the rear. |
