The smaller of the two major Centauri Capital Ships used to patrol their massive space empire, the Vorchan-class Light Cruiser is well armed for a vessel of its size. Equipped to be a major threat to vessels much larger than it. Armed much in the same fashion as the larger Primus Heavy Cruiser, the Light Cruiser is built with the idea of system domination in mind. As the Centauri expanded, it became painfully obvious that there was no way they could maintain the massive battlefleets needed in order to secure their empire from any and all threats. Due to the lack of Heavy Cruisers and space platforms necessary, designs for the Vorchan Light Cruiser were drawn up. Intended to operate in squadrons and support the larger fleet elements or patrol systems on their own, Light Cruisers were supposed to assure Centauri dominance. However, as it was with the Primus Heavy Cruiser, the main design flaw proved to be a definite lack of Starfighter hangars or ability to support a Starfighter squadron. This in turn meant that the Centauri fleets would often be forced to flee in the face of an enemy with superior Starfighters or face total destruction. This was to prove escpecially fatal during the first Narn uprising when the Narn were able to secure several Starfighter squadrons and attack the Cruiser Halberd as it attempted the evacuation of the Narn garrison. Seeing this, Centauri designers have been attempting to design an effective Starfighter Carrier but have thus far been unable to do so, making the Vorchan Light Cruiser the most effective escort the Centauri Fleet has to offer. |
