Florida is in the southeastern part of the Unites States. It is known for its good climate. Florida has been given many interesting names.

Florida is a body of land with water on three sides. It is a PENINSULA. Florida has the Atlanitc Ocean on the east, and the Gulf of Mexico on the West.
People lived on the Florida peninsula thousands of years ago. European explorers called the people they found here Indians. The explorers thought they were in India. Today these people are sometimes called Native Americans.
Spain was the first country to rule Florida. Spanish explorers gave Florida its name. They claimed the land for Spain. The Spanish flag was the first to fly over Florida. Other countries owned Florida later. Each country flew its own flag. This was done to show who was in control of the land. Sometimes we speak of "Florida Under Five Flags." Flags of these countries have flown over Florida.

Florida proudly flies the flag of the United States now. Florida also has its own state flag.
