ABC 2/09/01 15:21:33 A senior American State Department official says an increase in asylum seekers heading to Australia through Indonesia has made it easier for international terrorists to infiltrate the region. Mark Bowling reports the US Assistant Secretary of State for East Asia, James Kelly, says terrorists from the Middle East and other countries are in Indonesia and pose a threat to US interests. There has been a series of unexplained deadly bombings around Indonesia in the past year. Last month, the United States embassy in Jakarta said extremist elements may be planning to target US interests, particularly government facilities. It said the threat extended to tourists and hotel guests. Speaking in relation to asylum seekers, including the latest Afghanis, assistant secretary James Kelly said the easy movement of people around the world is bad news and is of concern. 2/09/01 15:21:33
