ABC 31/10/01 9:21:09 An American State Department report on religious freedom says the Indonesian government is incapable of controlling religious extremism or preventing violence by radical groups. The International Religious Freedom Report 2001 cites killings and forced conversions to Islam in the Maluku islands, attacks on churches and repeated assaults on entertainment centres as examples of religious intolerance in what is officially a secular state. It says this has led to allegations that government officials are either complicit in some of the incidents or allow them to occur and the government claima it doesn't have the capacity or authority to deal with the emotions of private individuals or groups who target others because of their beliefs. The reports cites what it calls, credible reports, that individual security force members in the provinces of Maluku and North Maluku are responsible for the torture and deaths of Christians who refuse to convert to Islam. Both Christians and Muslims allege that police and soldiers often side with co-religionists in the communal conflict. The US report accuses the authorities of letting the paramilitary group Laskar Jihad operate with impunity. Many of its recruits have been deployed to Maluku and North Maluku since late April 2000, where they join fighting against Christians. 31/10/01 9:21:09
