ASSOCIATED PRESS, Monday September 24, 2001 Indonesian Bomb Blast Kills 1, Injures 7 In Ambon JAKARTA (AP)--One person was killed and seven others injured when a bomb exploded Monday in the Indonesian town of Ambon, which has been devastated by years of sectarian strife, police said. Lt. Col. Hasanuddin, Ambon's police chief, said the bomb was hidden in a car that was passing near the town's state-run Pattimura University. Hasanuddin, who like many Indonesians uses only one name, said it wasn't immediately clear who was responsible for the blast. The blast was the second explosion in Ambon in the past three days. A truck driver was killed Friday when his vehicle blew up. Ambon is the capital of the string of islands that make up the Maluku province. The region, also known as the Moluccas, has been wracked by three years of fighting between Muslims and Christians, which has left an estimated 9,000 people dead. The area, about 2,500 kilometers northeast of Jakarta, was known as the Spice Islands during Dutch colonial times.
