Foreign embassies close on different grounds

JAKARTA (JP): Besides the United States and the British, Canada and France have also closed their embassies over different grounds, an official said on Monday.

The head of the mass media and public information affairs division at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Wahid Supriyadi, confirmed the temporary closure of the four foreign embassies.

"One of grounds for the closure is an anticipatory measure to public reaction over the U.S.-led attacks on Afghanistan. Others because of public holidays in their respective countries," Wahid said.

He cited the closure of the Canadian embassy because Monday was a thanksgiving day in Canada.

Wahid admitted that most foreign embassies had included a contingency plan if the situation worsened in Indonesia.

"The contingency plan, including the planned evacuation of foreigners, has long been in place including when foreign ambassadors were summoned by the Jakarta Police chief last week," he said as quoted by Antara.

National Police deputy chief for operations Comr. Gen. Syafruddin Pagaralam instructed all provincial police chiefs nationwide on Monday morning to prepare for an emergency situation and to provide security for the possible evacuation of foreigners.

City police officers have been deployed to safeguard the U.S. British, Australia and French embassies, while 30 armored vehicles of the Jakarta Military Command have been stationed at the National Monument (Monas) Park in Central Jakarta inanticipation of unrest.

Meanwhile, the Jakarta International School in Pondok Indah, South Jakarta, closed on Monday in anticipation of protests and attacks following the Sunday attack on Afghanistan, the news agency reported. (dja)
