The Jakarta Post, (10/23/2001 10:28:44 PM) Makassar students conduct search for non-Muslims, two injured MAKASSAR, South Sulawesi (JP): Dozens of students from the Indonesian Muslim University (UMI) in Makassar held a search for non-Muslims in front of their campus on Jl. Urip Sumohardjo on Tuesday afternoon. Students blocked the road and demanded the identification cards of those passing the area to check their religion. The incident, which began at about 1 p.m. local time, caused tension in the area as four people -- who happened to be non-Muslims -- were beaten by the crowd after showing their identification cards. Policemen quickly dispersed the students and diverted traffic so vehicles could avoid the UMI campus in a bid to prevent further problems. Witnesses said that the students' act turned violent as they dragged people out of public minivans to check their identification cards. If they were non-Muslims, they were beaten by the students, witnesses said. UMI students who conducted the search said they were angry over the burning of an effigy of Osama bin Laden by groups of students in North Sulawesi, and that their search for non-Muslims was a "retaliatory act". Makassar Police chief Sr. Comr. M. Amin Saleh regretted the incident, saying that the police would investigate the case and he told the students not to repeat the action. "We have told them (the students) to never do this again. We deeply regret the incident and we will investigate this case and lay charges," Amin said. Two people had to be treated at a nearby hospital for their injuries. Hassanudin University (Unhas) sociologist Darwis, urged the police to take strong action against the students. "This sets a bad precedent and the police must arrest those who carried out the search. This action is intolerable," Darwis said. "This kind of search was very ignorant and shows a lack of rational thinking. It certainly does not reflect the intellectuality (of the students)," Darwis said, adding that innocent people had become victims because of the senseless act. "How can people conduct a search just because a dummy of Osama bin Laden was burned? That's brainless. There is no excuse that can justify the search," Darwis said, adding that the innocent people had become victims because of the senseless act. "How can people conduct a search just because a dummy of Osama bin Laden was burned? That's brainless. There is no excuse that can justify the search," Darwis said, adding that the students' action was embarrassing to the people of Makassar and must not reoccur again. "That's why the police must thoroughly investigate this case," he added. (27)
