The Jakarta Post, (9/27/2001 7:18:51 PM) New Zealand issues warning on travel in Indonesia JAKARTA (Agency): New Zealanders were warned on Thursday to take extreme care in Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim country. A Ministry of Foreign Affairs statement said New Zealanders should closely monitor developments that might affect their security following threats from Islamic hard-liners against people from the United States and its allies, AFP reported. The warning said they should avoid large public gatherings and take particular care in Jakarta and in Surakarta, Central Java. Last Sunday, six militant Muslim groups -- each of about 25 to 30 men -- separately checked five hotels in Surakarta with the aim of forcibly evicting U.S. citizens from the country. No U.S. citizens were found there. The incidents occurred following Washington's threats to attack Afghanistan for harboring Osama bin Laden, the suspected mastermind behind the September 11 terrorist attacks on the United States. "While we are not, at this stage, advising New Zealanders planning to travel to Indonesia to defer their travel, we do recommend that such New Zealanders consider carefully their need to travel to Indonesia," the statement said.
