The Jakarta Post, (9/27/2001 2:18:09 PM) TNI to withdraw Second Joint Battalion from Maluku: Pattimura JAKARTA (JP): Chief of Pattimura Military Command overseeing Maluku and North Maluku provinces Brig. Gen. Mustopo revealed on Thursday that the Second Joint Battalion of the Indonesian Military's (TNI) elite troops would be withdrawn as they had beenin the troubled provinces for a long time. Mustopo did not mention how long the Second Battalion had been in the provinces, but they have been deployed in the area following the outbreak of the communal conflict there on Jan. 19, 1999. "The Second Joint Battalion will return to their respective military units, even though I have yet to receive instructions (from TNI headquarters)," he told Antara after watching a friendship football game between the military/police and local journalists in the Maluku capital of Ambon. He also revealed that personnel from other military units would be withdrawn when the time comes. Mustopo said that improving security in both provinces was the supporting factor for the troops withdrawal. "The situation in Maluku has recently returned to normal. It's now the journalists' task to inform the conflicting camps so they put down their weapons to create a truly secure situation," the commander said.
