Indonesia - OCHA Consolidated Situation Report No. 44 MALUKU[no report] NORTH MALUKUGeneral Situation The provincial Parliament rejected the result of the gubernatorial election following allegations of malpractice by the elected candidates during the election process. A new election is to be held later this month, but the candidates involved in the controversy are barred from contesting again. Ternate remains calm despite fears that the decision might spark protests from discontented parties. IDPs The Satkorlak office reported that 267 Muslim IDPs returned from Tidore Island to their home village in Jailolo sub-district on 30 September and 51 Muslim IDPs from Ternate to Malifut sub-district on 2 October. On Monday, the Governor of North Maluku, Muhyi Effendie, launched a three-month family data collection programme to be conducted by the Family Planning Coordination Board (BKKBN). The programme, which involves all community figures, is aimed at collecting comprehensive data about families, including vulnerability. Assessments ACF completed assessment on water sanitation in Bacan sub-district. Health MDM routine consultations during the week covered 214 patients in Ibu sub-district, 19 of them were malaria infected. MDM conducted training for 57 traditional birth attendants (TBAs), 12 midwives and 8 nurses in Ibu sub-district. IMC continued support to health care activities at the Puskesmas (community health centres) of Tobelo, Galela, Kao, Daruba & Posi-Posi Rao of South Morotai, and Bere-Bere of North Morotai sub-districts. WVI is preparing, in coordination with the Ternate health office, a new small-scale health education programme in Ternate for the benefit of IDPs. Water and Sanitation MDM is executing 10 new projects including the rehabilitation of community health centres, rainwater reservoirs, MCKs, and wells in Ibu, Sahu and Jailolo sub-districts. Shelter WVI distributed roofing and reconstruction kits to 42 families in Tobelo sub-district. Peace building and Information Dissemination Program USAID/OTI in cooperation with the PMI is supporting the provision and distribution of free local newspapers to IDPs and communities in remote areas. Over the last three months, areas benefiting from this project have increased from 10 to 20 sub-districts.
