The first 4-wheel drive road that I ever drove on is Boulder county road 102J, or as I call it the Jamestown/Gold lake loop.
The Jamestown/Gold lake loop starts in Jamestown, and takes you south to Gold lake, a lodge/camp west of ward. The road is about 6 miles long, and connects to several other roads in the area, Including the Gillespie Gultch Road (I will cover that on another page), which completes the loop.
The Jamestown to Gold lake portion of the loop is usually passable by any stock 4X4. The road has one river crossing, and some rock hopping, but it is a laid back 4X4 road (which is why I chose it as my first) as long as you don't get onto the wrong spur.
To reach the start of the Jamestown/Gold lake loop, go west out of Boulder, Colorado on Leehill Rd till you reach the stop sign, but go straight onto, and over, Olde Stage Rd to the next stop sign. You are now in "Left Hand Canyon". Turn left. Follow this road for about 4 miles to the next intersection, and take the James Canyon Drive turn to Jamestown. Turn left on 3rd street, or the first left past the stop sign at Main.
I rate this section as 4
