Mi-WOK OHV

Stanislaus National Forest

(Deer Creek/Crandall Peak Areas)

May 30, 1998

Located approx. 10-20 miles NE of Sonora, off hwy. 108 and Middle Camp Rd. Only 2.5 hours from the SF Bay Area. (Gas up there is cheap, compared to the SFBA)

Even though this park offers some challenging hill climbs and rough road areas, there are some well maintained fireroads which could easily be accessable to 2wd vehicles. The park trails are well marked by alpha/numeric signs coinciding with the map of all the OHV Routes. This park is open to mountain bikes, horseback riders, hikers, dirtbikes, quads and four wheel drives.

The terrain has a variety of open meadow areas and well wooded Pine, Oak and Redwood areas. The trails are mainly red dirt and sometimes can be very rocky. There were a few mud puddles as well. The brush was grass with wild flowers and lots of Manzanita bushes on some of the trails.

There is a campground in the Crandall OHV parking and camping area, which is a semi-developed area for OHV users to park and ride both the Crandall Peak and Deer Creek areas.

Not really sure where we are going, just exploring

Leo needed to put his CB antenna back

on after a few low braches

Stanislaus River

Narrow Redwood Trees. A little mirror adjustment

to the passenger side and I squeezed through

Views from the top of Grant Ridge

Who says full sized trucks can't rock crawl???

The only snow we saw was on top of the far mountains

More scenic views from Grant Ridge

Notice all of the lava rock formations

This was a really cool trail that scaled

the side of the mountain, leading us into a trail

that narrowed a little too much. You cannot

see it in this picture, but there are a few

old mining caves up in those rocks

This is where we decided we had enough scratches for one day

Those thorny bushes on the right side were brutal!!

One last look back at the rock formations and caves

This was one steep hill, even though it doesn't look like it.

That's why I had Leo stand in front . Chuck is inside waving,

but you can't see him. I had quite the climb to get back into the cab!

These yellow wild flowers covered most of the open grass areas.

Very pretty.
