Svalbard-Tour april '99

HOME
SvalbardVind. Beautiful...

In April '98 two friends of mine, and me spendt 2 weeks on Svalbard / Spitzbergen. In Longyearbyen we rented snowmobiles and sledges, and travelled around in the beautiful nature on our own.

The three of us are:

Leaving home

We left Loerenskog where I live, 18. of april at 7 am, in our 21 years old Volvo, heading for the Gardermoen Airport. Vi checked in, and had 47 kilos to heavy luggage. US$ 100.- to pay extra for that. Take off was just before 9 am. One hour and 25 minutes later vi landed in Troms, for refueling, filling up the empty seats, before we continued to Longyearbyen. two and a half hours later we landed on Svalbard.

The day after, Monday, we picked up the Polaris snowmobiles, sledges and our 18 Jerry-cans of extra fuel. Then we headed for Kapp Martin.

Some of the equipment we brought:

SvalScooterMotor. And this is what happends if you forget to cover the engine before leaving the snowmobile for the night. Pretty hard to start it up again...

One night I did not cover the engine before I went to sleep. The result was an engineroom filled with snow. Took some time to clean it up, but I did not forget it again.

Leaving Kapp Martin, we came back to Isfjord Radiostation, where we had left some fuel. From there we drove to Barentsburg, the Russian city on Svalbard. Had dinner, and headed for a russian cabin a few kilometers outside Barentsburg. Spendt the night there, and woke up with 4,5 celcius below zero, inside.

Continued to the bay of Agardh, and got there at 5 am. Beautiful ride, in perfect weather. Saw the first (and last) Polarbear on the tour here.
