The Two-Handed Cross-Over

The two-handed cross-over is one of the simplest moves that you can do using both chains and incorporating the movement of a cross-over. The idea is to cross the chains in front of your body at the same time, so that they swing for a beat in time on their opposite sides. You can then bring them back to their starting sides, or hold them for a couple of beats where they are. You'll need to use cross-over #1 when twirling forwards and cross-over #2 when twirling backwards.

How to Make the Moves...

The Two-Hand Cross-Over

Starting position:
Twirling in time either forwards or backwards at your sides.

There are 4 key positions for performing the two-hand cross-over - these are shown below. Note that this move can also be performed with the chains spinning backwards, and that the directions shown in the images below will be reversed.

Begin with the chains spinning at your sides in time.

When the chains reach the top of their circles, move both your left hand across and down to your right side and your right hand across and down to your left side at the same time.

Once the chains have crossed over, allow them both to twirl up behind you on their opposite sides.

As the chains reach the top again, cross them back in front of your body so you are twirling in the starting position again.

From the starting position, you can make another cross-over, or go into pretty much any other move.

Variations:

There aren't really a lot of variations that you can do with this move...

  • Forwards or Backwards
The cross-over can be performed with the chains twirled either forwards or backwards.

  • Breaking the Rhythm
Breaking the rhythm and holding the chains on the starting side, or on the cross-over side, for a couple of beats is one of the few things you can do extra.

  • Behind the Back
Practice doing a cross-over behind your back and you can then add the two together, switching from in front to behind.

  • It's also not a bad move to use at the start of your sequence, to get some visual movement going.
