Installing 94 Firebird Trans-Am
Seats
Bolting Them In
When I bought the bronco it had some too big, too high seats out of a 80's
vintage chevy 4 door car in it, they didn't even fold forward. I
decided that I needed something more useful, and comfortable in it.
When at my local dismantler I came across these seats and they were perfect.
They sit pretty low to the floor, the driver side has a tilt adjustment,
they are out of a 2 door car so they fold way forward, they have plastic
backs with map pockets, and the crowning touch-they have power lumbar,
and side bolsters. The driver side seat I simply unbolted and removed
the seat that was in there, positioned the seat suitably, drilled, and
bolted it in. I positioned the front of the tracks about 1" from
the edge of the seat platform. The passenger side I went more complex.
Instead of building a floor section to bolt the seat to, or using a bronco
track (which I didn't have) that wouldn't stay folded forward with the
hiback seats I used the track out of a 1988 ranger extended cab with buckets.
This track is a double track, designed to slide well forward to allow back
seat access in ranger pickups. This track required some fabrication
to work, but created a sanitary install when completed. To start
with cut off the mounting brackets front and back on the ranger track,
the ones that bolt to the floor. Grind off the rivets that hold these
on, as you will drill out these rivet holes for mounting with 3/8" bolts.
Also cut off the brackets that held the seat belt mount, and the shrouding
on the track. To make these tracks bolt to the firebird seat you
need to narrow them about an inch. Instead of cutting 1" out of the
middle braces you need to grind off the welds that hold the inside upper
track on, and reposition this to fit the seat. Bolt the seat down
through these holes in the rear, and in the front redrill new bolt holes
to fit. Now to put them in the truck. Position the seats so
that the rear of the tracks is just up on the rear floor, and the inside
track is just on the center floor. These 3 bolt down here, as for
the outside front I welded a bracket up out of 3/16 plate to mount it.
Power
The connections to the seats are fairly simple. The orange lead to
both seats is 12 volts. The Black lead to the driver side is ground.
The other 3 connect between the two seats, along with an air hose to provide
air on the passenger side, as the pump is on the driver side seat.
