  Party!
By Jim Brown
Our new officer Installation party will be on June 27, from 2pm - 8pm at our house in Pine Valley. Hopefully, I'll have the 1924 Ford Model "T" running and be able to take everybody for a ride in it. Failing that, we can at least take pictures of everyone in front of (or in) the car. For those who want to, we can roll out the newer '55 Thunderbird (never mind that it is only 43 years old), put the top down, and take a spin around the valley. Maybe not as much fun as the "T," but we Aztecans can make fun out of anything we want, right?
Wear '20s clothing and have a ball!
It will be a potluck. How about following this plan?
Last names that begin with A - C ; Dessert
D - M; Main dish
N - Z ; Salad
If you're famous for something or have a better idea, let me know, or call Connie Bahner (party chair) or her assistants, Patti O'Mara, Florence Brown, Betsy Macias, Bea Briggs or Joan Johnson. Thanks, and hope to see you there! I will have maps made and distribute them at a meeting soon.

  BIG party!
Usually, International Toastmasters Conventions are held at remote locations, far from San Diego. (The 1999 convention will be held in Chicago, Ill., the 2000 convention in Miami Beach, Florida). Attending one of these events would involve airfare, rental cars, etc, necessitating a large outlay of cash. But this year is different. The 1998 convention will be held in Palm Desert, California, near Palm Springs. About a three-hour drive from San Diego, it is "in our own back yard," so to speak (no pun intended).

So I propose to you:
Lets go as a club! At the risk of exposing myself (I never would) as a mathematical dunce to you bunch of university level accountants, here is what I figure it will cost, assuming that two club members share a room at this first-class resort, the Palm Desert Mariott. Of course, if you take your spouse, the room will be $95 per night. I have visited the Mariott, and it is truly an outstanding resort. Several pools, good restaurants, cocktail lounges, etc. There is a golf course (at least one, I think) do you hear me, Kris? I don't have all the details about the hotel, but have visited it for breakfast, and it is beautiful. I'll get particulars about the hotel for the next issue of the Azteca Early Bird.

Room: $47.50 (½ of $95).
Convention Registration for Saturday - $53.00 (you must buy this to go to the speech contest Saturday night)
International Speech Contest - $18.
Total: $118.50 + incidental meals, etc.

$118.50 is a lot of money, but this may be the only chance we have to go to one of these things, and it would probably be a lot of fun. We could car pool down on Friday morning, August 21(we'll need an air-conditioned car or two), lay around the pool (cool!) Party, kick back, and watch some very good speakers, and, I'm sure, learn a lot in the process. There are other events, as well, such as the Rock & Roll disco night, at a cost of $49 plus the $53 registration fee for Friday (what?). Paying this also entitles you to purchase tickets to the Club Leadership luncheon, only open to Club leaders and
DTM's.

The April issue of Toastmaster magazine has all the details, registration and reservation forms, and the reservations must be in by July 1. What do you think? Lets talk about it!

  Elections coming up!
With the club officers term of office about to end, give some serious thought to running for a club office. Not only will you get leadership experience within the club, it 's a chance to repay the club for the skills you've learned thus far in Toastmasters. Being an officer will bring great personal rewards, and a real feeling of accomplishment.
