Financial Hardships

Last night the phone rang and on the other end was a friend of mine. Frustrated and irritated she had just balanced the check-book and again this week there was very little left. This is a problem that many of us are facing in our current economy.

In a Newsweek article I read at the doctors office earlier this week it quoted that 40 percent of all American home owners are 30 to 90 days behind on payments! 40 PERCENT! WOW!

I see prayer requests constantly in regards to finances not to mention prayer request's for marriages on the rocks due to finances.

I was a 19-year-old girl when Vern and I had pre-marital counseling. Pastor Steve told us to watch out for the Four F's in marriage, friends, frustration, family and finances. I have experienced all of them, However the one that does not seem to go away is finances.

Money Matter's can and are a tough area to conquer and sometimes we may feel not conquerable at all. We may look at it as hopeless, But we well know that NOTHING is impossible with God! Matthew 19:26 tells us But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible, and Luke 1:37 For with God nothing shall be impossible.

Yes, I know easier said right? Not really! Look ar Sara, Noah, Abraham, Rahab all of them believed in faith that their needs would be met, Even in most cases there was no hope!! (see Faith's Hall of Fame in Hebrews 11 KJV).

When we are overwhelmed by our financial troubles of course we need to pray and seek God's refuge, but stress and frustration is not going to make anything happen any quicker, nor is it the answer.

Jesus tells us in Matthew 6:25 Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? 26 Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they? 27 Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature? 28 And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin: 29 And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30 Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith? 31 Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? 32 (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. 33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. 34 Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.

Hmmm, so the fowl, the lilies and grass need not worry, then why do we? The word is clear! How much more He cares for us! Verse 32 says HE KNOWS your needs also Matthew 6:8 Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him., Does that mean we need not pray and make our request's known? Of course not! Matthew 21:22 And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive. Luke 11:9 And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. 10 For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened. 11 If a son shall ask bread of any of you that is a father, will he give him a stone? or if he ask a fish, will he for a fish give him a serpent? 12 Or if he shall ask an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? 13 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?

WOW That about sums it up!

However, how is it we can put aside our worries in regards to finances?

First, the key is also found in Matthew 3 verse 33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. Rather than spending time worrying and stressing out over finances why not focus on the Kingdom of God, furthering the Kingdom of God, and seeking after the things of God that are not perishable?

Second, Remember it is not His desire for us to be concerned with the things of this world. It is not His desire for our lives to have worry and fear. Phillipians 4:6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. 4:7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus, also see Mark 4:19 And the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful.

Third, God answers ALL prayers! However His answers can be YES, NO and WAIT! Galations 5:5 For we through the Spirit wait for the hope of righteousness by faith.

Psalm 25:5 Lead me in thy truth, and teach me: for thou art the God of my salvation; on thee do I wait all the day.

Psalm 27:14 Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD.

Psalm 40:1 I waited patiently for the LORD; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry.

Psalm 33:20 Our soul waiteth for the LORD: he is our help and our shield.

Fourth, Do not attempt to derive plans for making extra money! Sure we see drug dealers, those who cheat the system and those who lie get ahead and there is that temptation to follow that lead but God is very clear once again: Galations 6:9 And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not. 2 Thessalonians 3:13 But ye, brethren, be not weary in well doing.

And last but certainly not least remember we have assurance that He will meet all of our needs! NEEDS not WANTS! There are some that teach that we can have all of our wants and hearts desires, they goes as far as telling us that praying God's will be done is WRONG. How can it be wrong if it is God's will? Philippians 4:19 But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus. In the KJV the following scripture reads: John 15:7 If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you. However sadly enough in other Bible versions the words " shall be done unto you " is changed to say "will be given to you". One may ask is this a serious change? The greek phrase for for "done unto you" arrives from the greek word "ginomai" and means: 1) to become, i.e. to come into existence, begin to be, receive being 2) to become, i.e. to come to pass, happen 2a) of events 3) to arise, appear in history, come upon the stage 3a) of men appearing in public 4) to be made, finished 4a) of miracles, to be performed, wrought 5) to become, be made. Now the greek phrase for "given to you" arrives from the greek work "didomi" and means: 1) to give 2) to give something to someone 2a) of one's own accord to give one something, to his advantage 2a1) to bestow a gift 2b) to grant, give to one asking, let have 2c) to supply, furnish, necessary things 2d) to give over, deliver 2d1) to reach out, extend, or present 2d2) 2d3) to give over to one's care, intrust, commit to give what is due or obligatory, to pay: wages or reward 2f) to furnish, endue. I will let you be the judge of the difference here.

So how can we sum up dealing with our finances in reality?

1. Be focused on the Kingdom of God. 2. Look at what you do HAVE rather than what you don't! 3. Consider the Blessings God has placed in your life rather than pondering on your desires. 4. Pray and seek Him, as we covered earlier YES HE KNOWS YOUR NEEDS but desires to hear from you! 5. Don't become weary of following His instructions for your life!

My Sisters I write this to you because I am there with you! However, it is my ATTITUDE that has changed! Is the house to small? Praise the Lord! for the roof over your head! Is the car old and beat up? Praise God it gets ya where ya need to go! Want Steak? PTL for the ground beef that feeds your family! Not enough to pay ALL the bills! PTL for those you can pay! Trust God He is Never too late! Hebrews 10:23 Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised; Also Ladies remember the importance of being a good steward of what He has Blessed you with! I leave you with one promise to rely on Ephesians 3:1 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ: AMEN!

Below is a sermon that a friend posted at Women at the Well, it may appear harsh and written for men, but none the less it is TRUTH!

"If You Were to Die Today…"

Luke 12:16-23

Last week, I counseled a man concerning his troubles. Because of the nature of his troubles, I discovered that he had no preparations towards his death. I told him because of the nature of his dilemma, I advised him to get his finances in order lest he hand over a disaster to his family. I have several family members and family friends of ours that have no plan or preparation for the future. They have thousands of dollars of debt and they keep on racking it up. They have no plans for retirement, but they continue to wait until it’s too late. Probably in the past couple of months, I’ve encountered incidents similar to this one, both by saved and unsaved people. My boss at work tells me about his financial problem. He is constantly talking about money. He is close to fifty and finally got his first house (with the help of his mom). He has 401k, but has borrowed against it twice already. He told me that he’s already planning on borrowing from it again once he gets that one paid off. He is relying heavily on Social security when he retires. He makes more than $2 an hour than I do. He tells me that he’s hoping that his mom dies before he retires so that he can make ends meet. He is in very bad shape for the future of his family.
We have way too many people living like that in America. But what bothers me more than anything is the saved people of the world handing over disasters to their family when they pass off of the scene. I want to speak to you tonight and ask you the question: If you were to die today?

I. First question I want to ask everyone is: If you were to die today, what kind of financial preparation have you left for your family? - I ask this question, because I have talked with many preachers and I myself want to avoid any unnecessary stress during the death of a loved one.

- Prov:13:22: A good man leaveth an iinheritance to his children's children: and the wealth of the sinner is laid up for the just.

- It would be wise to get your financces in order ASAP.

- It’s time for Christians to stop reelying on the Gov. and rely on God instead.

- Don’t count on welfare or Socialistt security, it’s for those who don’t plan ahead

- I believe it is the duty of every CChristian to make their transition to heaven as easy and smooth as possible.

- Check to make sure you have insurannce, and not just accidental.

- Pay all of your bills, get rid of aall of your credit card bills, and maintain a low cost lifestyle

- But the best thing you can do to geet out of financial debt is to start tithing. A tithe is 10%, that’s $1 of every $10 you make. - Tithe off of your increases, tithe off of your earnings, and tithe off of gifts.

- Most people in financial debt oftenn to fail to tithe.

- I’ve heard it said, and I believe iit too. You can take care of a family of 4 on $6-8 a day. That will cover their food, clothes and transportation costs.

- If you can’t live on $15,000 a yearr, you won’t be able to live on $35,000!

- I remember working with a fellow onn nights who made the same amount of money as I did, also his wife also worked and he was on WIC. My wife doesn’t work outside of the home, but we didn’t put ourselves on some voucher system. This fellow was a smoker and a drinker and couldn’t afford to take care of his child. - Most people who have debt problem often put themselves there first.

- Make sure your spouse or next of kiin knows what to do, where to do things, and how to do things before you pass away.

- I’ve got a family member of mine, wwhen her husband passed away, she didn’t know how to pay the bills, read a phone or electric bill, or even how to write a check.

- I’ve got things sorted out that my wife would be able to pay for the house, the bills, and the funeral when I die. She should be able to just work a nominal part time job to support the family after about 6 months to a year.

- I see too many families that will nnever make anything of their lives or maximize the full potential of their lives if they don’t start putting things into order.

- People who don’t appropriate their funds properly will be a slave for life to their creditors and the Government.

- Don’t spend the rest of your life bbeing a slave! Get up now and start seeking financial freedom.

II. The next question I want to ask is: If you were to die today, how much have you failed to give to God - We live in a generation that strives to keep up with the Jones.

- We have way too many material thinggs that we definitely don’t need!

- Many people are robbing God becausee they have decided to build bigger barns.

- I recently talked to another felloww who I thought was pretty well off. But this fellow told me that he’s still renting, maximized a couple of credit cards, making payments on several different vehicles.

- He wasn’t just being made a slave tto debt, but also is robbing God of everything that he could have given to him instead of trying to build a bigger barn.

- I’m not saying its wrong to have soome luxuries in life, but I am saying, make sure you don’t rob God while you obtain those items.

- There was a fellow I knew who critiicized a preacher for making too much money, but turned around and took a trip with his family to some exotic place like Hawaii and charged it all on his credit card.

- I remember working with a fellow onn nights. Who claimed to be religious and saved. He had a house, bought a car, a jeep, satellite dish, a computer, and a couple of cell phones. Then later tells me that there is no way that he couldn’t tithe because he couldn’t afford it. He was robbing God by building bigger barns.

III. If you were to die today, have you given your first fruits?

- Vs. 17 of Luke you read the questioon; "what shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits?"

- God already told you what to do witth your first 10%

- Prov:3:9-10: Honour the LORD with tthy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase: So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine.

- God doesn’t promise that everyone wwill be filthy rich if you give liberally, but He does promise that he will meet your needs.

- He doesn’t always give you money. SSometimes He gives you clothes, gifts, food. Sometimes there are times that He is taking care of us by not letting the car break down.

- Let me make it clear that the tithe is to go to the church and the offerings go to the building or missions

- Bring that tithe to the Church
>
- Don’t buy something for the Church and then deduct it from your tithe, that is unscriptural and quite frankly very rebellious.

- You are looking at a man who tithess off of his income (Gross), 401k, gifts, and all little extras that I get somewhere down the line.

- If you haven’t started tithing yet,, then I suggest that you start now before God’s judgement comes upon you and puts you deeper in debt.

Illustration-

There was a village where a missionary was trying to start a Church. This Church was a nominal Church sometimes struggling financially. It came to pass that the main money counter soon became ill and died. The question arose around the Church, who could they trust to count the money. Finally, a grain storehouse keeper stepped forward and volunteered to accept the responsibility under one circumstance; no one was to know anything about the finances for 1 entire year! This was a strange request, but since he was the grain storehouse keeper and everyone trusted him, they agreed to his stipulation. After a year, the finances of the Church were revealed and it was shown that they paid off the land and the building and had a remarkable amount of money in the savings. They asked him how this was possible. He quietly told them, "All of you bring your grain to me for your storage. I would immediately take out 10% of your grain and set it aside for the Lord. Nobody even noticed that it was gone. And now look at what could happen if we all do what the Lord wants us to do!"

**If you were to die today, what kind of shape would your family be in? If you were to die today, what would you have failed to give to God because of bigger barns?

If you were to die today, would you be able to say that you’ve given your first fruits?
