The above lands close
Lembar harbor and the southwest peninsula
With several enticing offshore islands, the southwest peninsula is
an exciting proposition for those who like their travel rough. This
area is arid and scrubby, with only a few villages, whose sparse
population makes its living from the sea. Lembar, the gateway to the
peninsula and the port for Bali, is 22km south of Mataram.
Approaching by boat from Bali, the entrance to the rugged harbor is
spectacular, but the village itself insignificant. As the crow flies
it's around 30km from Lembar to Bangko Bangko at the tip of the
peninsula; by road, however, it's a rutted, dusty and far more
tortuous journey following the north coast. The road is only
black-topped to Sekotong, after which it deteriorates badly and
you'll need a powerful bike or jeep. Most of the beaches on the way
are pure white and glorious: Tawun is especially lovely. You'll find
accommodation at Sekotong Indah Beach Cottages, 25km from Lembar,
which have a small restaurant attached and a choice of rooms or
cottages - you can also rent a boat to cross the Gili Nanggu from
here, to find a boat out to the islands
from Lembar, head straight through the car park in the main
port and talk to the skippers in the warung just on the shore
expect to pay around Rp 40,000 for a trip out to Gili Nanggu.. Pelangan has good snorkeling just offshore and a public boat
runs to Gili Gede, and at Labuhan Poh there's a pearl-farming
operation.
Bangko Bangko first acquired a
reputation a few years ago as a prime surfing spot, but the
inaccessibility of the place by road, and the fact that it has
little else to offer (there's no snorkeling or coral here), means it
has never really developed into a resort, although keen surfers
charter boats from Bali, bringing all their food and equipment with
them. Two enticing groups of islands lie just off the north coast of
the peninsula: Gili Nanggu, Gili Genting and Gili Tangkong form part
of the cluster closest to Lembar and Gili Gede, Gili Asahan and
Gili Poh are part of a much larger group further west which is
located just off the coast at Pelangan. Some of the islands are
sparsely inhibited, and all have white-sand beaches, peppered with
coconut palms and mangroves. There's accommodation on Gili Gede with
an attached restaurant and very little to do but relax as well as
tourist bungalows on Gili Nanggu, at Istana Cempaka. Accommodation
is in bungalows and a small restaurant is attached. If you arrive in
Lombok by ferry, you may glimpse the islands to the south as you
approach the turn into Lembar harbor. To find a boat out to the
islands from Lembar, head straight through the car park in the main
port and talk to the skippers in the warung just on the shore.
