"EVERY GRAIN OF SAND" BARB JUNGR SINGS BOB DYLAN |
Bob Dylan's output over forty years has been prodigious. Most everyone knows a song or two but many do not progress naturally into the brilliance and variety of his writing because they do not naturally take to the quality of his writing because they do not naturally take to the quality of the maestro's voice. Perhaps this is why Dylan himself has propelled and indeed developed his nature so consciously over the years. He has continually redefined himself in musical form and style, constantly rearranged old standards and has always dared to do the unexpected. It is a way through to him, to seeing what he is about. It is a rare privilege then to experience a terrific jazz and cabaret singer, Barb Jungr, replumb the depth of some of those words: to witness her mining and exposing riches from the mere handful of songs that she, clearly, has come to love. With completely new arrangements and a stunning sense of theatre Barb shifts from driving narrative to intense personal reflection, from deceptively simple lyricism to earnest prayer all with an unerring appreciation of what gold lies beneath. Dylan's genius for lyric composition and melody is magnified by her 'no frills', direct approach and it all happens before your very senses. The small combo of cello, double bass and percussion, always attractive and inventive, supports her own versatility. She startles us; now shattering the familiarity that has confined a song; now releasing hitherto unknown nuances and power. One very recent song, 'Not Dark Yet', that stares into the abyss with Dylan's characteristic honesty and needle-sharp clarity was a masterpiece in performance. It is a stunning collection. All thirteen numbers appear on her album 'Every Grain Of Sand' released in March. There's the title song and 'Don't Think Twice It's Alright,' 'What Good Am I,' 'I'll Be Your Baby Tonight,' 'Forever Young' and 'Ring Them Bells', are all show stoppers. Wonderful. Rush along and see her. This work should be seen and heard by anyone who yearns for simplicity and grandeur or just likes a bit of popular music with content. (Fred Proud, Soho Society) |
